Shroud of the Avatar delivers Release 50 with balance, polish, and optimizations

Focusing on its top launch priorities for Shroud of the Avatar, Portalarium pushed out Release 50 today with tons of balance tweaks, optimization improvements, and polish passes for its community to experience.

Players should find that the framerate has taken “another step forward’ with this build. Release 50 also contains polish for all of its starting scenes, the rebuilt Sunless Barrens and South Drachvald Spur, a huge expansion to the crafting system, better NPCs and animals, UI tweaks, and a big rework of the math driving its combat system.

“We made incredibly strong progress on performance, improved reward cycles, clearer direction, new user polish, story polish, and UI polish,” Starr Long said. “I know that I say this every time, but this is definitely one of the largest and most ambitious releases we have ever done.”

Wife wanted me to clean up the attic. Wanted to turn it into a playroom for the kids. So, being a good husband I did exactly that. Found a box of ‘old’ CD and DVD Roms, including Tabula Rasa.

Yup, If Ultima 8 and 9 didn’t teach me anything, Tabula Rasa sure did. Not a single penny of mine will ever go to a company or game that has Richard Garriott’s name in it’s credits.

I agree, it is pretty amazing that they manage to keep knocking it out of the park, with bigger and better releases month after month. This one is huge, and it’s pretty much all smiles coming from the player-base today.

This release is fantastic. It’s all coming together in a fun and beautiful way. The release notes are pages and pages of new things, fixed things, tweaks and optimizations. Looks like “The last 20% is the most important part” as Richard keeps saying, really is the truth. This game is turning out to be solid and fun.

They say there’s faster load times, but does anyone have some proof? Load times are still long and when you’re in multiplayer mode with other players and getting it done in combat and stacking buffs framerates can drop to single digits still. Would love to see some PVP with a framerate counter going, because it’s still not that great.

Game is so beautiful. Writing is above par and one of the best communities I’ve ever played with.

My only gripe at this point is the use of heavy instancing. But I love enough about the game that I can overlook this. Still, I will probably always question this design choice.

NPCs that teach you the backflip emote when they learn their husband is dead is above par writing? “Phineas Drumplemouth”, an NPC that is a word for word parody of Donald Trump is above par?

A community dedicated to profiteering off each other as real money traders is one of the best communities you’ve ever played with? That attempts to manipulate moderation to prevent anyone pointing out their actively deceptive measures to scam people is wonderful? That harasses and stalks people in real life , even going as far as sending rape and death threats over Christmas is the best kind of people?

It is true the game can look occasionally good… if you’re running it from a Solid State Drive and have a high end graphics card, and are in a small instance, and one that doesn’t have too many people in it.

Good luck getting a high end graphics card with the Crypto-currency bubble though. Oh, did I mention, it’s a game that spent some of the backers money on purchasing a crypto-currency to supposedly put into the game for people to further money launder with? It’s not in yet, but Portalarium are still sitting on an unknown amount of NeverDie tokens…

Neither of these have been in game for months. Please stop spreading false information.

Wait, they WERE in game?!

Probably poor writing decisions on the Phineas bit.

If I were to guess on the backflip, two different people putting things in, one putting emote learning in, the other writing the dialog.

I think he means the community is friendly .After that rant though I do wonder if it would be a game for you because you don’t seem the most social of people .

And going for his post, the community isn’t really that friendly.

Teleport to Rift’s End, it’s happening now, great mix! 4 Year Anniversary of Avatars Radio as well. http://avatarsradio.info/StreamPlayer.html

Come on over and check out the community instead of believing one persons rant. I think we are pretty friendly. I’ve never had a bad experience with anyone in the game.

There’s an in game party starting in 1.5 hours, you’ll meet lots of nice people. Darkstarr, the Executive Producer, is DJing, and he’s pretty great at it.

At this point, I’m imagining that months from now I’ll be reading, “Focusing on its top launch priorities for Shroud of the Avatar, Portalarium pushed out Release 150….” :)

Fortunately, you probably won’t, because the game is unlikely to still be around in a few months…

So it wasn’t what you wanted eh? I get it. I backed SotA, and ended up not playing it, but I certainly won’t bash it for the sake of bashing it. If people are having fun and enjoying it, then okay. I’m happy for them. Perhaps you should move on and save yourself from further butthurt?
