Elite Dangerous’ Beyond – Chapter One’s beta begins today

When I bought my husband Elite Dangerous a few weeks ago, he asked me what it included, and I gave him a blank look – what comes in what Elite package and season is a wee bit confusing even for me. So the FAQ Frontier posted on the upcoming Beyond – Chapter One and its beta – which begins today – is most welcome to us, and I bet it will be for you too.

So here’s the deal. Everybody who owns any version of the game can access the beta for Beyond – Chapter one today, even if you’ve never picked up the Horizons season pass. That won’t hold true for launch, but it does for beta. The exception is on console; consolers can’t play the beta at all, but they will be able to buy the update.

The most important advice? “We wouldn’t advise taking time off to play the beta first thing tomorrow, as we don’t have an exact time that this will go live!” Telling it like it is! Check out the whole explainer on the official forums and let us know if you’re diving in!

So far I’m 99% happy with everything that’s been put in. The only problem I have seems to be this new Engineering Mechanic which will probably add to the engineering grind.

They’ve tweaked some of the ships as well. The T-9 can now carry up to more 256 tonnes (Making it the goto big trader) and the T-10 can now handle beam lasers and multi-cannons due to to an upgrade of the power distributor. I was flying around the Mega ships last night taking out wanted Commanders (Because what happens in Beta, stays in Beta) and was having a laugh. A T-10 with 9 Multicannons gives you more ‘Dakka Dakka’ than even some ‘Orc bois’ could handle.

Oh and there are Chieftains everywhere. I would say that Horizons is now a necessary part of the game, so steam sale is recommended

What? So no Evocati or having to subscribe to get first access to multi-tiered beta test? What’s wrong with these guys…. won’t somebody please think of the money!

The new graphics for planets are looking fantastic, they’ve done a really good job. A few screenshots here for the curious https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/95490-Screenie(s)/page600

My friend has 2300+ hours in this, I have no idea how he can do it and not get bored but if it’s your thing then you’ll probably love it

I bought the game on PC over a year ago, played it a few hours one weekend and didn’t touch it again.

That is until about a week ago when I binged some Orville and suddenly heard the calling of the Captain’s chair. Tried STO again, for the 100th time, said meh, and found Elite sitting on my Steam shelf covered in dust. Installed, spent too much money on joysticks, read every getting started guide that Google had to offer and now here I am. Hooked.

I sucked some friends from work into it with me and we have all been playing together in a private group nearly every night. One night we’re collecting bounties off of space pirates, the next we’re arguing over the morality of trading Imperial slaves. This is of course as we’re transporting 200 tonnes of said slaves across the galaxy and fattening our wallets to get us one step closer to that shinier combat ship so we can wipe-out those scumbags who trade in slaves. Despicable.

But, yeah, fun game.

There is something very real about that dichotomy haha.

Downloading the beta now. I told myself I was going to wait for it to go live but I just couldn’t hold out anymore. I HAVE to get my hands on that Chieftan. Plus the Beige Plague is now gone so planets actually have character instead of being beige space potatoes. Not hearing good things coming out of the engineering update though. Nervous about that one.

I like about 80% of this game, but it’s the 20% that holds me back. I wish it was a little more MMO-ish, i.e. massively multiplayer.
From the looks of things they may hammer this game into something closer to what I want to play, though, so I watch these updates with interest.

They seriously need to hire someone to redo their quest / event content … it took me a good 7 restarts of the game before I noticed that the starter quest doesn’t just end with the first jump & it gives you a list of other stations to go to for more training / missions that are useful at low levels.

I was clearing my save data and starting over because I thought it was just the first mission & then you were on your own, but I would drive myself bankrupt jumping to different stations to try to make money on shipping (after all the random quests were too high level or required a better jump drive than I could afford).

… But even after I had that facepalm moment, the quests still suck ass, do not really give viable rewards, and some things (like the scanning quests) are just flat out cluster fucks that barely function.

The squadron’s update later in the year will probably be more of your thing. Mind you, we’ve been crying out for the co-op wing missions in the update for years. Really looking forward to doing these.

I bought it at launch and I have only launched the game half a dozen times, I just can’t get into it even though it really appeals to me.

I am tempted to pick up the PS4 version and see if that is more playable, now that it is only $20 … but I have issues with buying 2 copies of the same game, when I wasn’t really thrilled with the first copy.

I’d recommend not to then in all honesty. I don’t know anything about the the console release but I can’t imagine that is so amazingly different that it would change your mind, and would probably make you more frustrated in the end.

April-Rain – I’m with ya, although I do play, it often requires more time in a sitting than I usually have. When I’m alone for a week-end and nothing but chores on the list it works, outside of that I only have time for Warframe grinding sessions, so pretty short spurts.

I have had friends throw up their hands and give up just trying to get a handle on the flight model alone. Like ramming the back end of my friends Sidey while on the pad to get the damn thing to dock because he could not get it to settle evenly (it didn’t work).

I play when I can because it let’s me imagine not being stuck on this rock with all these horrid people lol

Yeah, same here: all I am really looking for is an escape from this rock & shitty people, but the game is like the director made a shopping list of pet peeves (manual docking / sim flight controls / lunar rovers) & then crammed them all inti the game with no fucks given if it ended up actually being fun or just a shit load of busy work and chores.

Funny enough, the real difference between people who play Elite and those with 1000+ hours going strong is the core gameplay. Flying a spaceship is why I play. “Manual docking,” “sim controls” and “lunar rovers” are all the core of why I play. Actually, driving the SRV is probably where I have the very most fun. I can get lost on a .5 G world just speeding/jumping/flying around the surface.

Nothing as a critique, here. The truth about Elite is that it is a game about being a spaceship pilot and that’s what you’re interested in you’ll keep playing and playing… if it isn’t an inherent desire the rest of Elite will drive you away quick.

Honestly, the X series is probably a better bet for a less time-consuming space game with a somewhat similar backbone focused far more on a story/single-player experience.
