5v5 hero shooter FragPunk starts taking names for a Steam closed alpha scheduled for June 27

Earlier this week we reported on the reveal of FragPunk, another NetEase 5v5 hero shooter that leans into a colorful visual style and a shard card mechanic that applies game-changing effects during matches meant to “bend the rules of combat.” Apparently the news out of this one wasn’t quite finished, as the game is now poised to start a closed alpha test on Steam between June 27th and July 1st.

FragPunk’s alpha will feature all of the 70 shard cards that the game has planned to release with, as well as 10 heroes to choose from, four maps, and 15 weapons, some of which come with their own unique abilities. Interested players who want to try this one out can either share their email and region on the website or click on the “request access” button on the shooter’s Steam page, though it should be noted that this test is for US and Canada only right now.

The announcement of the playtest also came with an extended cinematic trailer that further sets the scene and the overall tone of the game’s world, which appears to suggest other shard card effects like a “HUD Remix” card that swaps character health bars. That video can be seen below.
