Star Citizen’s Roberts endorses Crowfall, Descent: Underground

Star Citizen boss Chris Roberts has taken a moment to endorse a couple of fellow crowdfunded games. He has high praise for Crowfall head men J. Todd Coleman and Gordon Walton. “These are two developers who could walk into managing any MMO in the industry, and it’s all the more impressive to me that they’ve chosen to build something different with the crowd instead,” Roberts writes.

He also enthuses about Descent: Underground, which seems only natural given that the project is led by Star Citizen alum Eric “Wingman” Peterson and features “quite a few Star Citizen veterans.”

Firstly, all that can be bought for real money now, will be available for purchase via in-game means.
Secondly, the concept of a single linear progression doesn’t apply here.  For instance, buying a ship doesn’t guarantee much at all.  There is no actual “top” to reach.  There is only the goals set by the individual for themselves, such as starting out as a hauler using an Aurora and then eventually working their way up to a Starfarer hauling massive amounts of fuel across the galaxy for competitive prices.

You seem to be under the mistaken impression that what people buy now will somehow be better than what you can get ingame or give people some kind of advantage.
While that is true for allot of games, it is not the case for SC
Nobody here buying themselves to the top as you say, because the top you claim people are buying themselves to does not exist.

There are no linear progression of ships where one ship is overall better than another, instead you have ships that will have specific roles they will be good at while not so good at other things.
A hornet is combat oriented and will be a good fighter, but it will not be very good for exploring or mining.
An Orion is great for mining as its designed for that, but will do poorly as a combat or exploration ship.

And everything currently for sale will be available through regular gameplay, its even bees specifically said that some of the best things ingame will only be available through gameplay.

Defector1980 You have a serious problem there if it makes your personal gameplay worse if someone else owns a ship hull before you do. Guess what the game is about, playing cool missions, experiencing story, doing fun activities with a crew. People owning everything in advance will have a hard time finding any long term goals. I´d rather have fun and earn credits while playing, starting from scratch, then buy the stuff I like. There will be also tons of cosmetic stuff to acquire, it´s not all about ships, ships, ships and it won´t be grindy trash either, you know previous games like Privateer and Freelancer, which never got grindy or repetitive. You want a grind mill hamster wheel go play another game that´s all about credits grind by doing braindead tasks, certainly enough out there to choose from.

Droniac rioinsignia Bioware essentially over-emphasised what they were doing in order to “sell” their product.  Nothing essentially wrong in that, it is a quite tactic used when attempting to market ANY product.  You over-sell the good points, and skim over the bad ones.
Which proves my point that it’s not just KS projects that attempt to make claims of “shaking up the system”, claiming to be innovative, etc, etc. All game companies (crowdfunded or not) jump on whatever marketing buzzwords are currently in the popular domain in order to try to differentiate their products from the rest of the rabble.

Cotic_OP rioinsignia The fact that the answer to your original question exists immediately after what you quoted, is a completely separate subject to the marketing terms used by those talking about their products.

rioinsignia Technically Bioware actually had a point.

Sure nearly every AAA MMO has some sort of story, but it’s usually an afterthought that receives little priority, isn’t particularly well-developed, and often requires a lot of player investment in the lore (usually in wikis or books) to actually get anything out of it. This is particularly true of WoW and most of its clones. The exceptions – like LotRO – still revolve more around their core MMO gameplay mechanics than their reasonably well-executed storylines.

SWTOR tackled storytelling in a way that only one other MMO – Guild Wars – had ever really tried before: the singleplayer RPG style. They put the story front and center and made the rest of the game revolve around it. And that made every game released around its launch window really taut their stories as well, even if that wasn’t actually the primary focus of those games, e.g.: Guild Wars 2. So it’s fair to say they did actually “put the story back into MMO’s” in a fashion.

And how would that turn out?
Your logic would suggest that certain people would react in the exact same way.  To roll their eyes once again and claim that he’s endorsing that one because he likes the look of it, and is therefore “mates” with those developers too. 
Which suggests that no matter what someone does in these circumstances, there will always be someone, somewhere, who will always try to claim that something nefarious is going on.  Even the intention is perfectly innocent.  But that doesn’t stop the trolls from claiming wrongdoing and looking for demons where there are none.
