The Secret World begins its epic forum game with a plea for help

A new forum game is afoot over at The Secret World, as one of the in-game characters, the Stationmaster, posted a cry for help with a mysterious MP3 attachment.

“This message came through today,” he wrote. “Garbled. Can’t make much sense of it. There was a number attached: 122635. Put on your best pondering hats. Give us a help. Yes?”

Funcom announced last week that it had been preparing an epic forum game for its fans. The community is already hard at work trying to figure out the meaning behind the number and the sound file. Listen to the message after the break and see if you can lend a hand!

Styopa RooWoods Nordavind SallyBowls1 Pretty much universal meaning I have not seen many people praising the changes but a lot of people complaining about them .

This game always was about challenge thats what made it stood out . Its a game aimed at adults and not childish gamers that want to have everything handed to them on a plate .

I think you are in the wrong in thinking this will bring more players to the game because this game was never designed to attract those type of players . There are plenty of games out there that type of gamer will find far more attractive before they even look at TSW . Lets face it the only game dumbing down has worked for was World of Warcraft . But the nature of that game appeals to a casual gamer .

My view is this will backfire like the Star Wars Galaxies TNG it is a classic example of developers miss reading their audience .

Estranged Hurbster Nordavind RooWoods SallyBowls1 Its not just at the low end of the game I was going through the Transylvania content when the change took place . Change in this case is upsetting a lot more than a few folks . I guess we will see who is right . If you are TSW will have a lot more players if I am it will lose a lot of players . Its a niche game aimed at an adult audience and it has been an audience that like its immersion . Part of that immersion was the mobs being a little more challenging than a normal mmo ( they were certainly by no means impossible if you applied a little thought and intelligence to what you were doing ) because it made added to the atmosphere of what is a horror game . You don’t get that same feeling when the mobs offer less difficulty  .

Well they have one less customer in me to today they reasons I found TSW special are going so there is not point me playing anymore . Its not a matter of raging quitting its just they no longer offer a product I will find enjoyable .

Still I got good value for money out of it so I don’t regret getting it but I kind of wish I had been able to complete Transylvania before what I consider ruining the game experience . In one fowl swoop its gone from a game that stood out among a lot of mediocrity to just another mediocre game .

This is very compelling. I am glad to see this going on in an MMO. I recall delving into such things when I created “Forum Quests” over in EQII to see how we could interact with players that were active in a specific realm of interest. I would have loved to get to the point of using audio, but most projects will not relinquish the assets needed to perform more research and implementation of these types of content. I wish I was playing this game. To those that do… have fun and share the knowledge.

mysecretid Styopa Hurbster Well, I’m English and it just sounds wrong. Cut down version of ‘helping hand’ maybe ?

AilsaN10 Yeah, I noticed from the odd grammar that the message itself was the cypher. I really wish I had more time for these things… well, thank goodness for aggregate brainshare!

Yeah. It’s a British English regionalism, and an archaic one at that.
If you talk to the NPC in-game who sent this new message, and ask him about himself, he mentions indirectly that he’s from Victorian-era England. i.e. the 19th century.

Cheers,

My son uses Ableton Live so he started trying to at least figure out the words being said. He said the words are out of order or don’t go together at all to form a sentence. He thinks they could have come from different NPC dialogue from the game but he has never played it so he doesn’t know.

RooWoods Nordavind SallyBowls1 You and I have totally different meanings of the word “universal”, unless yours apparently means “a few crabby bitches complaining that it’s easier now because they had to walk uphill in the snow both ways back in the day”.

Personally, anything that brings more players and more $ ultimately to this game is welcomed.

So if we solve this, do we finally get to find out what the top level faction level benefit “Vault Data Access” is?

Hurbster Colloquial English English, not American English…at least as interpreted by Americans. :)
