Elite: Dangerous sends pilots on a scavenger hunt for a graphics card

When you have an entire galaxy at your fingertips, why not turn it into a massive scavenger hunt? Y’know, for kicks and corporate promotion!

Elite: Dangerous has partnered up with Nvidia to give away five GeForce GTX Titan Black graphics cards. To win one, players have to hunt down in-game versions of the Titan Black that exist at a “mystery starport” somewhere in the galaxy and transport them to the Godel Ring in the Ededleen system.

The first five players to do so and submit proof will win a Titan Black card worth around $1337. The first person to make a leet joke in the comments will win our respect.

I’ll have to drag myself back into ED and give it another whirl.  I tried it right after release, and it was very much just fly around, kill some stuff, fly around, kill some stuff, fly around, kill some stuff.  I got bored with that back in Quake days, frankly.
My understanding is that in the subsequent patches there’s been a little more meat added to bare bones of combat and exploration?

Initially I didn’t like the sound of this, but when I saw that the “Titan Black” was a rare that had to be taken to a particular station, and in open play, the idea of people camping that station and potentially stealing a graphics card made me smile :)

Still not sure about in game marketing though. Hopefully this will rare.

I think I’d like this more if there were some sort of puzzle or riddle involved. This is totally randome search it could be anywhere. I don’t know if I have it in me to waste this kind of time. I just bought a 970 so I barely care.

Hmmm, got two weeks off work and a Titan Black would go lovely in my system. BRB – off to go do some deep space exploring :)

Dang. No chance at all for me to do this, but kudos to ED.

Anatidae That’d be cool, but I don’t think technology has caught up yet. It would take a lot of bandwidth to have everyone in the same instance and not have everyone jumping all over the place. Eve solved that problem by slowing time down to allow all the commands to trickle through, which isn’t really doable for a game where you have to aim.

It’s a fun game though. Yeah, it doesn’t have all the insane detail of Eve like crafting and such, but it’s fun. They’re doing some cool stuff with an actual evolving story that the players can participate in and affect the outcome of. It reminds me a bit of Ultima Online in that way. I’ve always said more MMOs could learn from Ultima Online’s dynamic narrative.

Even if I could find the cargo selling station, you have to carry it from there to the port that you sell it at in Open play, and there’s a reason I play in a friends-only instanced galaxy. So, good for those lucky 5, but yeah. Not even close to interested.

Besides, Titan Blacks are really only fully utilized for video rendering and editing and such, right? Or, y’know, dual 4k monitors or something. I run 2 1440p monitors, but my 760’s more than enough for that and everything on ultra in ED.

Pretty cool idea. I like ED, but the instancing turns me off a bit. I wish they had solved that in a different way. Not sure how exactly, but I was hoping for more of an EVE universe with ED.

Still, great idea for a giveaway.
