Ghost in the Shell Online: First Connection nearing Korean CBT

42

The popular anime franchise Ghost in the Shell will be making the transition to an MMOFPS: It prepares to start its first Korean closed beta test on April 8th.

Ghost in the Shell Online: First Connection puts players in the role of weaponized cyborgs who engage in PvE and PvP missions. In addition to thousands of potential loadouts, the game will feature a nifty “skill share” system that allows players in close proximity with each other to borrow abilities.

The title is being developed by Neople and published by Nexon. You can check a teaser for Ghost in the Shell Online after the break!

Man, I hope this is pretty well received. It’s been awhile since the last GITS game (since the PS2/PSP), and it’s been longer since there was a big cyberpunk focused team based shooter – heck, not enough cyberpunk games in general if you ask me. This one looks gorgeous too. Pull it off Neople; I’m crossing my fingers things go smoothly and I’ll be keeping my eyes glued to Steparu to check out coverage of the CBT :)

I really hope this game does not suck – it’s only GITS we are talking about. You are not allowed to fail when working with string IP brands like LotR and GITS.

wolfyseyes Ugh, every time I hear or think of that song, I’m reminded that Origa is no longer with us. :'( She was an astounding vocalist.
But anyway, I definitely agree that there’s no point in taking the Ghost in the Shell IP and just pasting it onto a bland, uninspired game. Well, I guess there is some point to it ($$$). But many fans of the series know to steer clear of it because it would be one hell of an MMO that could actually capture even part of the essence and themes of a series like this.

cursedseishi  Xenoverse essentially took DBO’s story where you help the Supreme Kai of Time and Time Patrol Trunks to protect history’s timelines from getting fucked up by the “Time Breakers” Mira and Towa. And you get to create a character from five races – Human, Saiyan, Namekian, Majin, and Frieza’s Race.  Human/Namekian/Majin being similar to their DBO counterparts in style (i.e. male Majins being like Fat Buu and females being like Kid Buu – no races except Saiyans get any transformation beyond Kaioken’s various levels (x1/x3/x20) though).
It also is always-online (though you can play offline if the servers are down or if you temporarily cut your Internet connection before loading into character select) and features basic MMO staples such as a leveling system and quests which give RNG-dependant drops.   And you can group up with up to three others I guess to do the quests or do up to I think 3v3 PvP battles.
There’s also most likely going to be a sequel unless they bloat up the existing game with DLCs up the wazoo (beyond the initial three they have planned).  ’cause the story ends on a note where Mira/Towa are still around and make plans to still screw with the timeline.   Dunno if the DLCs actually expand on that or not nor if they’ll conclude the story with the last DLC.
But yeah I can see why most companies are afraid to do a DB MMO.  But if a company were willing to make a Dragonball-styled sandbox with multiple planets to explore and stuff and tons of skills/fighting styles to learn and make your own, that would be pretty darn badass.  And it’s essentially been done on BYOND RP games that I’ve played in the past.   It could have a ton of potential if someone had the guts and ambition and resources to step up and do it.

I think it being Korean and will probably never come to NA or EU is probably a good thing. I’ll never have to decide if I want to DL this abomination of a game onto my computer and wonder how much better it could have been if only…

I love Ghost in the shell I hope it doesn’t end up as another generic shooter.
