Camelot Unchained releases alpha video

330

The first look at a new game is always exciting. You get to see a game as something other than concept art and development promises; what could be better? So Camelot Unchained fans should be happy that some of the first live footage of the game has been streamed by CohhCarnage, a fan given authorization by CSE to show off the game and reveal the game’s alpha presentation.

You’ll have to ignore the “do not stream or distribute footage” bit in the lower right-hand corner during parts of the video, of course, as this streamer was given explicit approval to stream and demo the new video. Check out the video just past the break, and let us know what you think of the current state of the game in the comments. The alpha video starts around 3 minutes in.

Mark Jacobs Don’t worry Mark..:) As a former DAoC player along with my wife, we are planning on being there on day one! We played the hell out of Darkness Falls back in the day and still consider it one of the best dungeons ever in any game. It’s my wife who is concerned with “PvP Only” mostly as she does PvP on occasion, but really hates the “kill the healer” first as a tactic in many other PvP games and she always plays a healer.

This game will have more to do other than RvR in the form of crafting (a whole class devoted to it) and building.
What I think most people are doing, is equating CSE’s stance on no PvE leveling with no PvE at all. There will be PvE, for various reasons; keep defense(guards), resource gathering and The Depths (a non instanced dungeon). You just won’t be leveling from it.
CU won’t be all things for all people. Most need to realize it’s okay to play more than one game. If you have an itch for PvE as previously defined by other games, than you may want to play another game to supplement that need. Then come play CU when you have the itch for a real meaningful TriRealm/RvR/PvP experience.

Rzar Rhime FYI, there is no PvE leveling but we will have plenty of PvE activities including:

1) The Depths – An RvR/PvE dungeon

2) Crafting – including killing/skinning of critters

3) Building

4) Guards, NPCs, etc. in/around buildings, towns and Places of Power

5) …and possibly more down the road depending on Stretch Goals

Two the big differences between Camelot Unchained and something like Dark Age of Camelot is that the progression system is different (no race to RRs) and that you will progress by helping your Realm even if your main interest isn’t killing other players.

Thanks for checking us out. Hopefully, you may like what you see and decide to give the game a shot.

Rhime Yeah I was excited about this game.  Until I read no PVE.  No thanks.  I like PVP, but I don’t want to do it all the time.

I just… buttwings…
Why not move them up just a bit? Sit them off the Lower spine maybe? I get that it’s not meant to be the usual upper back wing trope, great! And I like everything else it’s just… buttwings >.<

The ability builder alone makes this game a go for me. If you visit the website, the theme of the this game is very interesting. Its on my radar for sure.

From the Progression BSC page under progression limits”vertical progression is carefully designed so new players will always be competitive with veteran players”. That sounds like a focus point to me. He also stated in a Q&A video at one point something close to ‘If new players can’t contribute 2 years down the road, we have failed’.
What we know of the crafting class….they make your stuff, your buildings, etc. Everything will eventually decay so they will continue to have things to make. Regardless of how much worth they have (probably quite a bit), taking gear creation away reduces it.
I will agree with the Crest grinding (depending on what period of play you refer to)…but it was still better than kill 100 mob quests for minimal rewards. *The other point here is if you add xp to questing, it would increase the disparity between players and draw people away from a fight.
As for the last bit…I agree. There are many studios who fail to pull through on what they have promised, yet from what there is already in place for this point in development I am impressed. Does that mean that everything will be perfectly how people expect? No…nothing can be perfect. Do I think that CSE will do what they can to make the best game that they can? Yes.
It would be rather foolish to think that they wouldn’t make the game as good as they can. Especially considering that population point you mentioned. The key will be retention and for that, they need to do a great bit of time tweaking things to keep the experience as balanced as possible.

Mark Jacobs Since the physics is server side, does this mean that the system requirements are lower and my PC won’t have to run the physics?

We don’t know the crafter class yet so it is way to early to tell anything about the value of gear.
The competitivenes of new players has been discussed on the CU forum and MJ said that he will look after that but the statement that it is a main point of focus, that’s exaggerated. And last but not least, grinding is not PvE only related at all, remember the crest grind in Warhammer for the weapons for example ? Aweful !
So CU is interesting and all and they are super open and everything but i have seen and heard so many promises in the last years from studios, i believe things when i see them. Don’t believe the Hype.
