City of Titans demos its costume-making process

Every superhero worth her or his salt knows that it’s the costume that makes the hero. Well, that and a heapload of mutant powers, high-tech gadgetry, and billionaire funding. But it’s mostly the outfit.

That’s why City of Heroes spiritual successor City of Titans is putting in a lot of effort to create a spread of costumes for the game. In a new dev diary, the art team walks through the creation of a couple sets of tech armor, starting from sketches and progressing to full 3-D models.

The artist says that the assembly line may look weird, but that it all has purpose: “I know this looks like a pile of weird polygons, but trust me — all the helmet surfaces are here and that will help on baking our detailed mesh over this one. I personally think it has some kind of beauty. The more space used, the better the texture resolution.”

You can watch a pair of videos of the making of these costume pieces after the break!

Furiant solipsis Exactly. And actually, the final style of the game isn’t going to be quite so photorealistic. But that’s how all the models will start. There’s this fascinating thing called Shaders, which is basically a custom bundle of settings for how light is processed. These Shaders can have a profound effect on how things look. It’s one click to apply once developed, so at some point, somebody is going to cook up our own custom Shader that will give the game a bit of style.

solipsis I don’t know, the base material is rather nice, though it could use some specular work and better distribution of detail. Given that the camera would likely rarely be this close to the model, it seems well within AAA quality. Light years beyond the quality of CoH, albeit an altogether different style (photorealism vs. comic). It seems obvious that the background is simply a photo placeholder.

Such a deliciously underrated film, Mystery Men.

solipsis hunterkiller37 Which part is terrible Solipsis? If you mean the costume piece itself – the helmet – I really don’t know what to say to you. If you mean everything else  – backgrounds and stuff – those are just placeholders. Development of the game and character creator are going very well these days but the zones themselves have not been built yet.

MagmaFist Denice J Cook It’s exactly as Magma says. The reason you are seeing more press updates is because our updates, as we get closer to a real product, have simply become more consistently newsworthy, or at least of broader interest. Massively has been featuring them more often accordingly. But it’s still something they do voluntarily, not something we ask for.

solipsis From what the devs are saying, this is more proof of concept than final graphics run. The idea is to create the costume maker (and the parts players can change), not the final costume piece finish and polish.
