Because the developers found that the game’s previous tutorial didn’t do a particularly good job of introducing the concepts central to the game’s sandbox play, so the most recent patch is designed to address just that. A new tutorial released into the wild today covers far more ground and also takes place in a large outdoor area, helping new players to understand what they’re in for once the tutorial is over.
If you’re still lost, the sci-fi sandbox is also adding mentor NPCs who will answer player questions about gameplay concepts, so you’ll have at least some idea of what you’re supposed to do in the larger sense. There are also interface improvements and the like, the sort of thing you’d expect from a large patch as the game creeps ever closer to release.
