Reddit revolt erupts over Elite: Dangerous expansion price

Not everyone was thrilled at today’s news that Elite: Dangerous would be expanding to allow for planetary touchdowns with its upcoming Horizons expansion. One monster thread has erupted on the Elite: Dangerous subreddit complaining that the expansion price is far too expensive and unfair to players who purchased the original game.

“Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to spend $120 on a game, no matter how good it is,” the original poster commented. “Anyone who has NOT bought the game so far is going to be able to get all the content and the original game for $60. But if you’ve already bought the game, it costs you $105 total. And Frontier is wording it like you get a DEAL for already having the game. That’s not a loyalty discount, that’s called screwing over everyone who already supports you. I don’t get it. How does that make sense?”

As of the writing of this article, the Horizons pricing post has grown to 758 comments, with similar angry posts filling up the subreddit’s front page.

mandervilleman I fixed it for you.

I’ve paid over £100 buying 3 Starcraft2 games. Now it turns out I could have just waited 5 years and got all that for £30! I demand Blizzard refund me!

dscrilla BigMikeyOcho Odd that you would say thet ED is a MMO…. It doesn’t even come to close to being an MMO. Give me a MMO, and I’ll think about it. ED will never be a MMO, just a locked in DRM, and that is it.

No I didn’t. The game was bone dry as far as content when it releases and it took months before they pretended to address that issue. Your wow comparison would be great if we weren’t talking about a game that’s not even a year old.

I’ve paid over £100 buying 6 original WoW and multiple expansions. Now it turns out I could have just waited 10 years and got all that for £10! I demand Blizzard refund me!

Get a grip people. Old content has always been discounted. You got your money’s worth by playing the game when it was new and shiny.

MalPherian GoJammit Ignore my dollar signs, i have been doing the numbers based on the British money. I don’t know why I started usig them on this one and left it out of the oithers…
Actually now that I read it back, I was mixing things up a bit. I was low on sleep. The $50 dollar I mentioned was the cost I paid when I pre ordered the game: 50 for the game, 50 for the expansion pass, and 30 for the pleasure of testing.  Minus the last part, I think that’s fair.

I disagree with this line of thinking. Everything has some depreciation which is always massively boosted when the next model in a line comes along. If I bought a TV for X amount 5 years ago chances are around 5 different models have been released that include whatever features my TV had + 5 years of innovations I can only dream about. New customers will get to pay X or potentially even less then X and get not only the features I got but 5 years worth of innovations. If I want the same thing I too have to pay exactly what they’re paying.

Its no different here. Thing is people in my opinion are looking at this wrong. Its not that developers are sacrificing US day one buyers in name of profit, they’re sacrificing themselves.  I mean we bought the game for $60 so we essentially agreed with frontier that their game was worth the $60. They figured that people who didnt buy it up till now didnt think their game was worth $60 so they decided to offer them the core game + season 2 for the same price, maybe that will convince them. Next year or so they’ll try to entice them with the game + season 2 and season 3 for the same price. That however is not cheating us in the least. We paid what their game was worth and enjoyed the time playing it. If they’re cheating someone its themselves because by doing this their essentially not getting paid for some of the work they did in a way.

People need to understand that when companies do something like this, they’re not giving away something of ours, they’re giving away something of theirs. That is in no way shape or form unfair on anyone.
