Albion is aiming at an EVE-like metagame

The Videogame Backlog has interviewed Christian Ziegert, who is the head of operations at Sandbox Interactive and who is responsible for the fantasy MMO known as Albion Online. The title is described in general terms, and the piece provides a good jumping off point if you’re curious about Albion and its player-driven mechanics.

Ziegert expects Albion to feature a lively metagame much like EVE Online, “where guilds and players are involved in heavy politics, espionage, and treason in order to progress and increase their power and influence.” He goes on to explain how almost everything in the game is crafted by players, though mobs will drop consumables and resources.

There’s a lot more to the interview, too, including bits about Albion’s full-loot PvP, endgame PvE, and crafting.

After the second alpha test I kind of fell off the bandwagon on this game…

A lot of unnecessary EVE hate… Really, if that type of gameplay isn’t for you great, don’t play it. Not every game has to appeal to your preferences, and just because it doesn’t appeal to you it doesn’t make the game objectively “bad”. For my money, the game has potential to fill a nice niche. I got a good feeling from playing it in testing for the short time I was there…

Aggrax I ask the same thing when devs constantly copy WoW.

Aggrax Does it really ? I mean like it or not EvE has been very successful for ccp and had no real competition for almost a decade. Trying to replicate what made it a  success without directly coping the game itself doesn’t seem like a dumb idea…even if I’d rather watch paint dry than play eve.

Why on Earth would you want to make something *more* like EVE Online? It boggles the mind.

This past test was my first test in Albion although was waiting for it for awhile.  I definitely have some critique’s of the game but overall it was a lot of fun.  However if your thinking that your gonna go in there and do everything on your own, than your completely misunderstanding the game.  It is almost absolutely necessary to have a guild.  Solo just doesn’t work.

The only other critique’s I really have though is that the grind was exceptionally bad this past test and and power in gear difference was extremely bad as well.  These are both things they mentioned that they will be working on in the foreseeable future.  I still think it is fun but tweaks are needed.  Honestly surprised by some of the comments here but to each their own.

Make of this what you will, agree or disagree, it’s fine… But I’m just gonna leave my experience here.

I bought into the beta, (because I’m stupid and never learn) and I really regretted it afterwards, it’s an okay game… For about 10 hours.
5 bucks per hour might be okay for some people, I’m just saying that there is better games and better value out there.

MatthewWard Meta is a prefix used in English to indicate a concept which is an abstraction from another concept, used to complete or add to the latter.
I don’t see the contradiction.
