More layoffs for ZeniMax (Update: Confirmed)

The end of this post has been updated with confirmation from Bethsoft as of August 20th.

Comments by a gaming industry recruiter and tech consultant have sparked a Twitter rumor that ZeniMax, the conglom that backs Bethsoft and The Elder Scrolls Online sub-studio ZeniMax Online Studios, has suffered a round of layoffs today, potentially at its hub in Ireland, which primarily supports ESO.

The Galway, Ireland, branch took significant hits to its customer support staff last summer. The ESO studio has lost several key devs this year.

We reached out to Bethsoft several hours ago for comment and will update as we learn more; we welcome more information from involved persons, whose anonymity will be protected.

Update 08/20/2015 8:04:32 AM EDT: A spokesperson from Bethsoft confirmed customer support layoffs to Massively OP in the following statement: “Following the successful PC and console launches of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, we have a thriving online community and have adjusted customer support to meet the ongoing needs of our players.”

There’s a layer of Hades reserved just for public relations personnel.

NobleNerd in the “customer support business”, especially if ITIL based, it’s common practice to start slightly overstaffed at the go-live, and then while you theoretically optimize your processes, streamline the incident management and stuff like that, you end up with less incident volume per employee and start reducing headcount.
Now, I’m not discussing cost vs. quality balance here. Just sayin’, it’s normal to reduce CSR staff 1+ year after the go-live of ANY service for ANY customer in ANY industry.

In other words: don’t take this as any indication for the state of the game or its development. It’s unrelated.

NobleNerd They out source customer support. Their support email responses are clearly struggling to use English. It would be comical if it wasn’t so bad.

Lord Zorvan There is nothing wrong with multi-player feature for either ES or Fallout, nor anything wrong with making them both an MMO. What happened to ESO is they treated (still are treating it) it like it is a single player RPG. In doing so they lost many MMO players because it was too restrictive in the leveling mechanics and lacked the freedom of an MMO.

So Bethsoft is confirming the layoffs with this PR statement? How can you be laying off employees and have a “thriving online community” that you are “adjusting customer support to meet the ongoing needs of our players”….. you laid off employees that were handling that!!!! Less employees means less demand for the service… how is this “thriving”?

All I know is on PC/MAC side on NA server we are hurting. You can now run dungeons and not be over run with other players. Champions are found fast in dungeons where when the game was over loaded with players you could wait a lifetime for those champions to re-spawn. Finding crafting materials are super easy now and you can load up with them unlike before where hunting them took forever.

The game is hurting and it is time ZoS did something about it, they need more people paying subs and not waiting for them to buy from crown store. My idea would be for a sub you get 12 character slots, this could end up saving them so they have money to burn to expand the game and make it better. What is going on now isn’t working and they need help financially.

Well they did just recently launch on consoles. Maybe that is what Greaterdivinity meant.
