EverQuest’s progression server is opening Ruins of Kunark today

EverQuest’s Ragefire progression server is opening the doors to the game’s first expansion today.

A community vote passed to give the go-ahead to unlock The Ruins of Kunark today. The expansion raises the level cap from 50 to 60, adds the continent of Kunark, and includes epic weapon quests. Plus, there are tons of dragons, but what else did you expect?

The Ragefire progression server came online in May, followed by a second such server, Lockjaw. Originally the community voted to delay expansions for six months from the servers’ launch date, but Daybreak decided that the majority wished for a quicker release pace. Players can transfer characters between the two progression servers for free.

I’m very active on lockjaw, and right now on both servers kunark offers some very welcome space. There are a lot of people on these two servers and on top of the boxing armies it means finding any open content in later levels is tough right now in classic. very tough.

The only thing i do with my main on lockjaw is raid when our guild is on the rotation which is between 3 and 0 times a week, and for us right now that’s naggy/vox/sky/inny.

Opening kunark radically changes that for people outside of the guilds on the rotation who are the only people who really have access to high level content at the moment.

In DBG’s defense I’m very happy they did what they did while they did screw up the way th evote worked they were trying to deal with the reality that while 1/3 of the vote (which was the majority) wanted 6 months, 2/3rds of the vote wanted right away or 3 months for kunark, which does very clearly imply that the real majority of players did not want 6 months. The way they dealt with that was to leave LJ at 6 and take Ragefire to 3 months and then allow free transfers for two weeks.
And I’m very happy they did that.

As of today i’m playing on both servers now as there is plenty of time to do so, while my main and my guild are on LJ.

TheBBP Well, the lockjaw server is set to be in Classic EQ for another 3 months.
Ragefire is already in Kunark.
Ragefire will probably have a new expansion every 3 months, Lockjaw will probably have one every 6 months. We don’t know, we’re pretty much subject to Daybreak’s whims at this point.

feldur I wish games would look like that. I have always loved the EQ artwork almost as much as I loved old-school AD&D artwork.

feldur I remember getting that Kunark box in the mail (direct from SOE!) and admiring that artwork a lot.
Still have all the EQ xpac boxes, although it wasn’t the same after PoP when Keith Parkinson stopped doing them.

This has me thinking hard about going back to EQ for one more run.  I just hope that they aren’t caving into the content leeches who power through everything so fast.  6 months between opening up expansions was a good number.

Satyros Yeah, funny thing is, that’s not even a typo, that’s what they literally did.   In fact they did it twice.
There was an original vote where 6 months won.
Daybreak said “Ok, we’ll revisit this.”
A month or two later, they put up the vote a second time.   Surprise, 6 months won again.
Daybreak said “Ok, 3 months it is!”
I have never seen a studio that so consistently chooses the wrong option when presented the opportunity.

Players voted/wanted X , Daybreak decided they knew better.

Pretty much sums up how much of a trainwreck and travesty of the EQ license I expect EQN to be.

Heheh.. That, right there, is applied communism.
Joking aside, I’m struggling to classify this company. It hits rock bottom in my eyes, only to start exploring new depths after a couple of months. If EQN is what I fear, their end is nigh.

So… a few inaccuracies there..
First, ONLY Ragefire voted to release Kunark, Lockjaw is still 3 months away, and still playing Classic for now.
Second, you can no longer transfer between servers with this split.  Free or otherwise.
