Overwatch panel confirms gay characters, teases Blizzneyland

Just because Overwatch will be a team-based shooter doesn’t mean that it lacks a story. On the contrary, Blizzard said that the game will boast a rich narrative that will illuminate the histories and personalities of each characters.

At BlizzCon this past weekend, the developers on the Overwatch panel confirmed that some of the game’s heroes will be gay, although they aren’t saying which ones yet. The devs did say that they will be revealing more about all of the characters and world through comic books, animated shorts, and additional cinematics. There were even hints about a possible map called “Blizzneyland,” although whether or not the studio is truly serious about this remains to be seen.

Overwatch will be released in spring 2016. You can watch the full BlizzCon panel after the jump!

Cool. I’m glad they are so inclusive, and even more glad that it makes so many people angry and confused

I agree, and thanks for making a solid point.
I’ve more or less tried to ignore this thread because replying to posters who are arguing against a game-world which is less diverse than the ordinary world I move through every day expends my patience.
The diverse human future they “pushback” against arrived a while ago; it’s already here. No amount of frothing will undo that.
By my calendar, someone is scheduled any time now to call me a Social Justice Warrior, in an angry rebuttal post which I will ignore. I’ll be leaving before they get here.
Be well,

PurpleCopper I’d put good money on Zarya *not* being gay.

breetoplay Wratts Having a MOBA/shooter to do it is absolutely perfect, too. They can diversify all they want, because all the players are going to care about is what the character can do, their abilities, and the overall meta. Essentially highlighting that a character’s race, gender, sexual orientation are tertiary compared to what they can do. I agree, this is a good trend.

ManastuUtakata Madda orionite Here’s to hoping that Mccree is gay. It would be a nice representation of my friends who are sick and tired to hear: “You’re gay?! But you look so…normal/masculine/manly!”

Madda But LoL has backstory o_O
Also, well, yeah, nice to have backstory in these characters and all, but in the end, they’re traveling around the world shooting themselves.
They could be in the island of Lost that wouldn’t make much of a difference, lel

Bannex19 “If you can’t understand that human sexuality is as uninteresting as human race you are simply perpetuating the injustice.”
Subjective. For some, human race and sexuality is extremely interesting. Like a genderfluid friend of mine who has a extreme adoration for people from all walks of life, but is too shy to do more than observe from a distance.
This person will hardly have any representation in any games or movies, or if he ends up having one, it’ll be one in a ocean.
This representation is not to be felt by you or me. We’re not part of that group. Be happy for the people who are and be done with.
