52-player fleet documents potentially record-setting Elite: Dangerous jump

Making the rounds today is this pair of epic Elite: Dangerous videos depicting the exploits of Elite clan Distant Worlds as 52 members of its fleet made a simultaneous leap into hyperspace framed by the Sagittarius A* star.

Redditor 4arkless, a member of the group, posted that the jump was “easily the coolest shit [he’d] ever done in a video game, ever,” and if you’ve ever pulled off a similarly huge (or bigger!) event in an MMORPG, we’re pretty sure you understand the feeling. He also says he believes it “was the biggest organized jump in Elite history,” which may very well be true since the game launched with a 32-person per instance cap.

Check ’em out below.

But when the article quotes such hyperbole, it is allowed to shoot it down. And we did.

” Ever done in a video game, ever” Which a quote from a Reddit post of a member of that group who did the Hyper jump event, not from Massively staff. Unsure why people have beef with this article and are being so dismissive of other people just having a good time.

BalsBigBrother PhoenixDfire Yeah, the hutton tuckers are claiming a 400 ship jump. Took part in one of their convoys one. great laugh.

ApathyCurve alexjwillis Its not because of the number of ships (Although the Hutton truckers claim they had a 400 ship mass jump), it’s the where.

That’s 52 players who’s spent weeks travelling to the super black hole in the centre of the galaxy just for the video. You plan the route wrong and you end up in a field of star where you can’t refuel and have to call in the fuel rats to save you.

alexjwillis With Elite, you gotta have a smooth experience because you’re physically moving the ship around, aiming, etc. With Eve, it’s just click on a ship and hit attack. We’re not a place in tech (and bandwidth) where we can have an action oriented game with thousands of players. It would just be too much.
Eve does a lot of the huge batttles with time dilation. You can’t really do that with a game like Elite.

If they are anything like you, they would have probably sat around waiting to be spoon fed an imagination while trolling massively article comments on a 2nd monitor.

alexjwillis Same here.  Large multi-ship simultaneous jumps are everyday ho-hum in EVE corps and have been for a very long time.  I fail to see why doing exactly the same thing in a different game is classified as some great achievement.

breetoplay alexjwillis Samizdat PhoenixDfire Maybe it was the phrase “ever done in a video game, ever”  that had us confused :D

Loopstah I think it qualifies as a ” you had to be there” type of thing. Watching it isn’t every exciting and the black hole looks like a sun with the lights turned off. Considering how cool Sgr A is in real pictures and all the weird stuff they’ve discovered in it’s accretion disk the game version was pretty …. meh.
I’m sure actually being part of it would give a very different experience though.
