RuneScape continues to be ridiculously popular: Jagex formally announced this afternoon that the game has officially seen 250 million accounts created since its original January 2001 release. Sure, it’s a hybrid free-to-play game, but that’s still a pretty darn big number few MMORPGs can match.

“In its 15th anniversary year, this month RuneScape hit a new and massively impressive milestone with its 250 millionth account created. Over its lifetime, RuneScape has seen real-life player weddings, united families spread across the world, and had been an escape for discovery seekers. The 250 millionth account joins the ever-growing band of adventurers in Gielinor, which means it must be time to expand the game world significantly.”

Earlier today, we reported on some of the other announcements made at this weekend’s RuneFest, including the news that the game is anticipating quarterly expansions beginning in June of next year with the Golden City of Menaphos. Old School RuneScape is also due for the launch of raids because, well, it’s old school.
