Black Desert’s 2017 plans include Striker class, climbing, and airships

If you happen to be a Black Desert player, then this weekend is bound to be a time of joy and celebration for you. The team announced its development plans for 2017 on Friday night’s super late-night stream, and it is a bounty beyond belief.

The fun begins with the game’s newest class, the Striker. The Striker is a martial arts-using class who favors combos and smacking things down with his bare hands. The class is going into testing in Korea soon with no specific date announced for the west.

The announcement of the Striker was just the beginning, however. The team said that it’s working on a climbing skill, the game’s very first airship, combat sailboats, a class rebalance, new zones, improved guild features, healing unicorns, upgraded graphics (without affecting FPS), a trading simulation, and the second part of Kamasylvia.

Press Release: Gigantic Ocean Boss “Vell” and new Striker class announced for Black Desert Online

Amsterdam, The Netherlands – April 8 2017/ During a live stream on Twitch today, PearlAbyss announced exciting new content for their award-winning MMORPG, Black Desert Online. The first being “Vell”, a fearsome, gigantic sea monster that lurks beneath the waves of the recently added Margoria region.

SIEGE WAR MILITIA – PearlAbyss is rebalancing the current Siege Warfare by allowing strangers (who are not necessarily part of a guild) to pick a side and join the war. This will add a new dynamic to the war as neither warring faction will know how much support they will get from the militia. This also means that powerful guilds, once thought to be untouchable will have to be weary for a coup d’état. Furthermore, these militia operate covertly as their guild and nicknames are hidden to other players. Additional strategic elements will be introduced such as the Shield Soldiers. These frontline soldiers are only allowed to carry shields, but are highly effective against flame tower attacks and will deepen strategic options to players.

UI AND GUILD SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS – UI and Guild systems will be overhauled and improved. It will be easier to join a guild and there will be tools in place that will allow for more smooth communication between guild members.

KAMASYLVIA PART II – The second part of Kamasylvia (content not yet released in the West) is now under development at PearlAbyss. This territory consists of the beautiful capital city Grana and its surrounding regions such as the Tooth Fairy Forest and the “Winnie Rune” huts. New battlegrounds will be added too. The Forest of Poly is an area where mushroom monsters live and players will be able to slay the Padus tribe in the Ringwood Forrest. Forest Lone Roth is a hunting ground especially designed for adventurers that are level 60 and above as they will most likely meet huge centaur’s that will be challenging to defeat, even in groups. Finally, there is a powerful Guy Finisha temple, a little hunting ground where level 60 adventurers can engage in one-on-one combat with powerful monsters

LEGENDARY UNICORN (DINE) – This Unicorn will have magical powers that will heal its surroundings. His dashing attack will make it a fearsome mount in battle.

ENHANCED LIFE SKILLS AND AIRSHIPS – As part of Black Desert’s already expansive lifeskills, PearlAbyss is developing a climbing system (working title) which will immerse players like never before. Daring players can climb castle walls and scale dangerous cliffs, while looking for scarce ingredients and lost treasure. If mountaineering does not take players high enough it is possible to board one of the new hot air zeppelins. Here players will have a stellar view of Black Desert’s beautiful world. This transport is slow and runs via a set schedule.

SKILL PROMOTION SYSTEM – This brand new system which is still in early stages of development will allow players to link two pre-awakening combat skills to create a new one. These new abilities are as powerful as a class’s awakening. Furthermore, it is the developer’s intentions players can preset and tailor their skillset to make a PvE or PvP character build.

NEW CLASS STRIKER – The Striker is a class who marries both classical martial arts as well as more rough techniques that have been popularised on the streets. He fights bare handed and also employs powerful footwork to overcome his foes. Key combat abilities (working name):

  • Adamantine: This shoulder charge melee attack focuses on the enemy’s torso
  • Knee Hammer: This forward charged knee kick raises your opponent up in the air and can be chained into a combo.
  • Soaring Crash: This uppercut technique will send your enemies flying which can be connected into a smash down attack or a move that knocks back the opponent.
  • Spinning Slash: This kick is performed by combining a spin with a kick
  • Massive Suppression: A devastating grappling move where enemies are grabbed and attacked multiple times before thrown on the ground.

In combat, Striker can approach targets with Knee Hammer for an instant kill or can lure surrounding targets to perform devastating combos for multiple kills. Skillful players can continuously combo moves into others, making the Striker a very stylish and effective class indeed. In PVP, this class is specialised on one-on-one encounters and has high defensive and evasive powers. Strikers can stiffen enemies and use combos to deal maximum damage. In PvP the Striker class is versatile and more difficult to master than its counterparts, but skillful players will enjoy the freedom of tactical choices this class brings to them.

Damn, no news of less grinding or at least a PvE channel.

Mr Poolaty

Can’t wait for the console release.

Is it bad I half expected the new class to be female only. Cause if we learned anything from Tera, all new classes MUST be female.

I’m always up for MMOs adding more modes of traversal, so climbing gets a thumbs-up from me. As far as upgraded graphics go, I don’t care about that personally. I’d much rather see the pop-in issues addressed. When I really get into a groove with BDO, I become numb to it. But when I come back after a break or from playing another game, I’m reminded of just how terrible it actually is.

If this game was better localized this could be the real wow killer.

With better localized i mean: less grind, less RNG, better UI and level synced pvp.

It surprises me that people seem to enjoy the PVP with as vertical as it is. Mentioned to my guild that challenge I’m having is that with my AP only ~180 and level 57, I can’t really tell if I’m failing at PVP because I’m bad or because everyone else is so further along the level and gear scale. One of our strongest members (level 60, 253 AP ranger) said it’s really all levels and gear; he dominates and basically just motorboats skills.

If that’s true, it’s very strange that your success in pvp is really driven by how much you PVE grind and play the economy to gear up. Skill is almost totally irrelevant

This is sort of true.

When you reach high levels of AP (250+) and start facing other people that high then mistakes and not playing skillfully will get you killed. Like not using forward blocks, super armor or iframes to counter big damage/CC moves basically is just a loss.

This is also where the “meta” starts to show itself and certain classes are just stronger because of their tool set. A classic example of that is warrior. In NA/EU, the average AP of players is low enough that the high uptime on classes like Warrior can be troubling for most people. However in KR where the average AP is higher they are capable of blowing through block in a single attack many cases.

So there’s skill there, and it’s kinda required, but irrelevant if your gear difference is too high.

If you don’t like grind play

If you don’t like the grind, take a break from leveling and do something else. There’s so much more to this game than just leveling. But if you want to be the highest level then of course you’re going to have to put in a sacrifice and some sweat to earn it.

Personally I like the pvp as it is and the grind. I grew up on games like Asheron’s Call 1 and Lineage II, which were just as grindy if not more and had less forgiving pvp. And I am so thankful you don’t have to run a linear quest line to level up. Best feeling of freedom ever. If that means there is a grind then great. Better than doing the same daily quest 100+ times for each level. That would be the height of boredom.

Striker looks pretty cool to me, and I really want a mod that causes the voice to “Hadouken!” during that charge up move. I now desperately want a unicorn

I know right!!!

Man is that unicorn ugly. And the “horn”. /facepalm

While I’m not super excited about yet another melee DPS class (tamer, musa, maewha, ninja, kuno…now Striker) the rest of it is pretty solid. I remember people commenting that Pearl Abyss wasn’t going to keep up with their frantic update schedule we’ve seen over the last year but this just goes to show they have no signs of slowing down or stopping.

Pretty good for a game which was considered a failure after it’s rocky Korean launch. Tbh, though, the game was only really complete after Mediah and Valencia 1. Everything before that was an extended Beta.
