Albion Online players accuse staff of guild favoritism, studio responds

Those looking for mild juicy controversy need to go no further than the high-strung lands of Albion Online. This past week on Reddit, a poster accused a Sandbox Interactive guild member of showing favoritism by leaking advance patch information so that guildies could prepare for changes well in advance of the rest of the community.

The studio responded in the thread, confirming that a leak took place, but saying that it was from a tester or testers in a “closed combat test” and not a staff member. “The info leak described in the OP comes from closed combat tests that we run with selected players now and then,” Sandbox Interactive said. “While these tests are under NDA, any player taking part in such a test could in principle leak that info.”

Taking this incident as a wake-up call to the danger of having a source of helpful information shared with only part of the community, SBI promised that going forward it would publicly post the purpose and outcome of these closed tests to level the playing field.

Yeah i see this happening alot with these kickstarter games. People will feel they are owed something for giving alot of money to these devs. This won’t be the last time. Just another reason to stay away from these games.

So, one guy/girl with a Reddit account gets whiney (because they didn’t understand utterly and totally everything that was going on) and suddenly the entire Sandbox organization is ‘bad’? At best that’s childish but I’d put my money on trollish.

Albion drama, always delicious……

Heh. I’m starting to wonder if the developers accidentally ordered their players with Extra Cranky sauce … it seems like a lot of the Albion playerbase is always angry about something or other on a regular basis …

The Albion community is one of the most toxic communities i have seen in a video game up to now. I don´t know what it is, maybe ffa pvp and full loot attracts these kind of players idk.

Yeah, in my experience, free-for-all PvP with full looting attracts a subset of hyper-competitive gamers who have little patience for anything they deem detrimental to the competition.

And, of course, the same conditions also attract a subset of gamers who can only accurately be described as “griefer and ganker assholes”, and who are not known for their willingness or ability to participate positively in game communities either.

Cheers,

Moreso than MMO gamers in general???

Shocking!…if you’ve never played an MMO before.

I find it cute how they say that they’ll make a forum post with the private tests as they happen. Not that they’ll cut out the shadiness which the players are selected. Not that they’ll cut the favoritism out. Just that they’ll be more upfront about it. Because those players TOTALLY WON’T take things they find to be OP on that build that the devs say are GOING TO be on the live server and get the jump on the economy to reflect it. Right?

This is a trash tier dev company. Looking forward to when this game goes F2P and when it dies thereafter.

They said a lot about all of those things on the forums and in the posts they made. The person wasn’t even an actual “employee” it’s basically a volunteer and his “GM” only applies when he’s streaming.

Based on their response it seems like it’s just some confusion due to them keeping the same testing setup as they had during the CBT’s which isn’t the best option for them post-launch.

Game’s still fun for a lot of people regardless of that. Hope it doesn’t just die off like that because of some of their poor choices.

meh this stuff is nothing new Zenimax and Blizzard had had similar controversies….developers are going to have their favorites.

This kind of thing even went on back in the old days of EQ. Sucks, but welcome to MMOs.

This almost looks like drama during early days of EVE where CCP devs were accused of using their position in favor of some alliance

I quit after the sub. No intention to pump money in it and I had a good time gathering/crafting. But that was all wasted as a non-PvP. It’s *NOT* that bad, but the time would have been better spent on any other PvE game.

There definitely needs to be more flesh on the bones. I’m also finding that, from a gathering perspective, it takes so long to move past tier 4 resources that there is simply no need to go to any of the PvP zones for quite some time. Which seems counter to what the system is supposed to incentivize.
