Crowfall delays again: ‘Soft launch is not going to happen by the end of this year’

Here’s a slight damper for your weekend: Crowfall has decided to delay its soft launch into 2019 due to the additional work that the studio believes should to be done. ArtCraft said that between “getting it right” and “calling it done,” it would much rather do the former.

“The game experience is paramount,” ArtCraft stated. “We firmly believe is the right path forward. These changes aren’t free, however, so we should recognize that more changes to core systems means more time before launch. As a result, I think it’s clear that our soft launch is not going to happen by the end of the year.”

The delay isn’t the first for the studio; by our count, it delayed major functionality as well as a soft launch last year too.

Now that you’re past the crushing disappointment of development schedules, here’s some good news. Alpha testing is on track to start later this summer and the studio is in a strong financial position after receiving an additional $6 million investment at the start of 2018. Other deals that have been made to help the PvP MMO include a partnership to bring Crowfall to Russia and an agreement to license its MMO technology base to an unnamed company.

This one has always made me leery despite it looking to have some cool ideas. Not just it’s PvP focus which isn’t my main play style but the fact they had a successful KS campaign and then asked for more money later on top of that.

Maybe they hadn’t anticipated the cost well and needed more money, a scenario that I’ve seen on other KS games, but it still looks bad from an outside PoV.

In most cases a kickstarter campaign is only meant to finance a demo and establish an initial audience of supporters. Having these things makes finding proper investment easier as you have proof that people like the thing enough to pay for it.

Good for Crowfall! I am disappointed that the soft launch is delayed, but I absolutely agree with the devs… so much better to get it right, than to get it done. So glad I helped kickstart this one. I knew they were the right people for the job at hand :)

When I scroll through MMO news websites, Crowfall is one of those where a reflex in my mind immediately says “No, this one isn’t important as it will come out in 20 years, keep scrolling”.

Every time I jump into the test servers I am impressed by the improvements. The game has expanded well beyond it’s original scope. More importantly it feels unique, which is important in a genre which is getting stale.

I’m actually very surprised by this. The game is fun now, and has been for quite some time.

I’m fine with waiting, but did not expect a delay.

Yeah I hear you, but I think the thing is that it decidedly is still not an actual game. The bones of the game are great, so many of the foundations exist and are already shaping up to be very enjoyable, but there’s like mountains of pretty important stuff missing still if the hope is to make it a coherent and complete game.

This gives a mighty boost to Camelot Unchained.

2019- wait, 2020 just to be sure.

Take your time, and get it right. Late is permissible; you get one real chance to attract and hold an audience.

I’ve been jumping into the Alpha tests over the past couple weeks (wanted to give them time to polish some things before jumping back in) and I am very happy and excited about the direction and improvements the game has taken over the past year. CF is really shaping up.

It still has issues obviously and systems are still in need of being brought online, but the delay is a smart move. Especially with all the flack Bless has gotten over its EA program, though obviously the situations are completely different.

Good, tbh.
