Lord of the Rings Online’s update 23 is coming tomorrow; here’s what to expect

Hear that buzz in the air? That electric crackle? It’s the sound of Lord of the Rings Online’s next big thing dropping tomorrow. As we’ve previously covered, we’re expecting a slew of changes to stat calculation, Hobbit avatars, lootbox drops, endgame currency, midgame mobs, crafted potions, and tier 2 difficulty for the instance cluster. That’s all in addition to the Grey Mountains regions as players will be touring Ered Mithrin, the Iron Hills, and the Lonely Mountain of Erebor itself. Get caught up on what to expect!

The one aspect that continues to baffle me with SSG is why they won’t put in a means by which solo and casual players can obtain empowerment scrolls and starlit crystals through the new content. Now that CoS no longer drops them at lvl105, we’re told by the forum cheerleaders that we’ve got to go back to U17 and the Minas Tirith dailies for scrolls and the god awful festival quests for crystals. What does it take to give us some dailies in the new content where we can obtain these? Quite unbelievable.

By making loot boxes a cash shop thing and adding gear to them (even if it’s not totally pay to win) there’s now more reason than ever to adjust the monetisation and stop charging for quest content 10 years old as well as every single expansion.

I had problems with the maps and quest locations, one reason I gave up on this game, good that there is progress, but just redrawing the map isn’t enough. They need to revamp quest indicators and such. If they have no plans to add full voice acting to the game, and force people to read quests and stuff, they better make it like WoW WOTLK or just WoW with addons so you can see quest locations better and spend less time struggling with the game and more time playing and enjoying it.

Had this date been announced anywhere by SSG? I would’ve enjoyed to play this at/shortly after release when tons of people are playing the new content, but now I won’t have time for it the next few weeks.

LOTRO doesn’t usually announce dates in advance for non-expansion releases, as far as I can remember. Updates rarely spend more than a month on Bullroarer, but that’s only a rough indicator.

I can understand that approach for “ordinary” updates that just bring some QoL stuff, here and there.

But this update seems seems more like a mini-expansion and it would be helpful to know the release date a 4-6 weeks in advance.

They announced it on Twitter and Facebook on Friday and then belatedly posted the patch notes to the forum. Still nothing on the launcher. Not exactly the best way to get their core player base to take notice.

Looking forward to see how my little hobbit will look tomorrow, as cute as a button I hope 😊

Also hoping to be able to finally complete Mordor and see the new content so time to head back home to Middle-earth for a while.

Yeah, glad the hobbit update is here.

Still ambling through Mirkwood though, no Mordor for me any time soon.

Wish SSG would do a dual subscription for DDO and Lotro.
