Torchlight Frontiers’ Dusk Mage harnesses both dark and light

Don’t call it Twilight anything — the Dusk Mage has her own non-vampire thing happening. The most recent of Torchlight Frontiers’ classes to be revealed, the Dusk Mage swings between both light and dark magic to use both to great effect.

The Dusk Mage was one of the playable classes in the recent alpha test and drew in a lot of player interest (at least according to the studio’s own infographic). Echtra Games released a video highlighting the mystical powers of this class and showing how players will need to balance light and dark spells to get the highest DPS potential.

Check out the trailer after the break, and then cross your fingers that you get into this weekend’s alpha.

I got in their first test via an application so am automatically in this one too (yay). They really seem to want to concentrate on server load more in this one so hopefully they’ll be sending out lots more keys to let people in who want to test it.

If you get in please try to remember we’re still in a very early alpha stage and there are only a couple of classes there right now. Try not to complain too much but instead give them valuable feedback :D Let’s save the complaints for if they reach release without listening to us or rush it out etc.

They are *actually* testing and working on things. It’s not a game preview or for pure playing at the moment (though when they’re doing server load tests that’s fine to do as well). It’s not one of those false tests where they don’t really change much after and are ready for release. Just things to keep in mind.

There’s something about the graphics I’m not completly happy with…

Is it just me or does the game look somewhat… I don’t know… “cheap” and “mobile-ish”?

I just recently reinstalled Torchlight II and (check this video for quick comparison) especially skill effects and lighting seem to look a lot better there? Are graphics still wip?

the game looks damn fine. Still it needs to come to mac or linux before I give it a shot.
Plus needs mods support. I love my mods in TL2.

T2 with mods is amazing.

How exactly will an online game support mods?

Yeah I’m not loving the animations either. I hope this looks more polished when it goes live. Otherwise, I love everything they’ve shown so far about TF.

The game is in a very early state right now. That said, there also is a huge difference between what you can display for effects in a single player game (or minimally multiplayer) vs what you can display in a game full of other people around. When you’re the only one casting or it’s just you and a few buddies linked up, you can go crazy with effects. When there can be groups of other people around you all casting as well, they have to have some limits on them. This is being made for a great many people being able to be on screen at the same time.

This isn’t like having the option of playing alone, there will always be other people around. We’ve had this explained to us multiple times before when MMORPGs are made out of otherwise single player or minimally multiplayer titles.

Anyway the game is super early and only has two classes there that aren’t even finished. As a tester I’ve been having a lot of fun with it and it definitely feels like a Torchlight game to me overall, which is the most important. There are some things that still need to be done and hopefully it won’t be released early but I’m willing to give them some time to do the stuff.

I’m not talking about the casting effects yet as most classes aren’t in the game yet and they all have different looking effects, but overall everything else looks fairly amazing. I’m finding that the landscapes and monster graphics and animations look far better than Torchlight II.

People complaining about these early builds is why they have to have NDAs and try not to let people see what’s going on a lot of the time. Though as a player of the tests I don’t see what you’re seeing. It definitely doesn’t feel cheap and mobile like. I’m seeing a big advancement since Torchlight II here.

I don’t need this in my life right now. Nope, not one bit.
