The Hearthstone leads Blizz lost last year just scooped up the Marvel IP with their new studio

Blizzard had a rough year losing key figures at the company last year – heck, this week it lost its CFO to Square Inc. (We don’t know whether that’s related to Activision’s CFO scuffle yet). While the retirement of Mike Morhaime stole headlines, the departure of Ben Brode from the tippy top of the Hearthstone team – followed by a whole batch of additional Hearthstone devs – appeared to be a serious blow to the game.

Those devs went on to form a new studio, Second Dinner, which until now had been mum on its project. But this week we learned what it was, as Brode and Hamilton Chu posted a video talking up their major investment – from ubiquitous Chinese gaming company NetEase – and their new IP, which just so happens to be Marvel. Oh yeah, and they’re hiring with their big stack of money.

The article neglects – sorely – to mention that NetEase is almost wholly owned by Tencent, and Tencent is the biggest growing problem in the Games industry.

I’ll take 100 EA’s circa 2008 over one Tencent.

Wouldn’t be my preference, but then the loss of MHO is still a sore spot for me :)

$30M. Those kinds of funding numbers tend to come with pretty big expectations. And a lot of baggage. Really, that’s crazy funding. Maybe MOP can get a copy of Brode’s pitch deck and see what he sold them. :)

Ben Brode’s Second Dinner orders a Marvel license and $30 million from NetEase

(And yes, I get RSI blows that out of the water, but this is 30M from a single source.)

When you consider that this is the Hearthstone devs and How much Money that game has made Actiblizzard over the last few years 30 Million and a Marvel licence is a Sound investment.

Thanks for the article. It at least outright says this is a mobile game so spared me from having to watch the videos to try and figure it out. I’ll pass.

Mobile games? It’s lucky we have mobile phones!

Not for me really as I game only on PC, but it does look like Blizzard is on downward spiral atm and can not catch a break.

When talented people leave is usually down to the rot above them which is very concerning.

Time is money, friend. Blizzard’s slow-mo developing just isn’t able to keep up with how fast things are changing or how quickly gamers rip through content.

A top rack of devs left Blizzard to form their own company to make games. This usually only happens when a company is in a spiral and the talent sees the writing on the wall.

Smart move on NetEase’s part, but also unscrupulous. I imagine there’s some shouting, slamming doors and nasty conversation going on in the depths of Blizzard.

On second thought here, this is actually juicier than I first imagined… and closer to another case of talent-poaching in a sense.

To elaborate, with netease being already blizzard’s numbah one best friend forever and a company-front for the chinese market it’s easy to imagine Brode already had ample chances to deal with them in-house… the fact he departed to “found his own company” with is first project being practically financed by netease makes me wonder if the “better offer” might well has been netease trying to cut off the middle-man and hire him and his team directly… outside of blizzard.

At least he now has a chance to put his creative juices to work on a important brand, slow and ponderous as it’s historically been blizzard must feel like a tight fit to creatives with ideas that want to see things done within their lifetime heh

If it’s a Card Game or Mobile I’ll pass with great prejudice.
