Apex Legends outlines balance changes as well as the philosophy of balance

Our balance philosophy is actually balancing things.

Balance is a tricky beast in a game like Apex Legends, and that’s the core of the philosophy behind Respawn’s overall approach to changes. The goal is to give the game fewer and larger balance changes in order to make sure that the changes don’t rewrite the game constantly; you shouldn’t need to constantly scour patch notes to understand how weapons you had practiced with work now. Similarly, a lot depends on the evolving meta and seeing whether things are actually unbalanced or if layers are just still in the process of learning the game.

With that in mind, the game’s Season 1 update is bringing with it some balance changes, such as making the Wingman and Peacekeeper weaker, improving energy weapon availability and ammo supplies, and hitbox size reductions for Pathfinder, Caustic, and Gibraltar. There’s a lot of good individual discussions about abilities that aren’t being rebalanced, though, so the whole read is worthwhile if you’re a fan of the game with even a passing interest in balance.

I was happy to read everything except one thing: the energy weapons. I think they’re missing a crucial factor in why they’re unpopular, which is the spin up time of havoc and devotion. Turbo charger fixes it but also happens to be the rarest of all the weapon upgrades so you can never count on finding one. Without it, the first few shots of a salvo are slow, while the first few are usually the most important. That’s enough to make me skip them every time.

edit: why could I post this comment right away but my previous one said “awaiting moderation” and then vanished?

I always liked Respawn’s balance philosophy in Titanfall 2, so I definitely consider it a good thing that they’re continuing it with ApeLeg.

This game still has its hooks super deep in my game time. The lack of buffs to guns like the Mozo and 2020 are odd. The nerfs make sense. Simply adore this game. I am waiting to drop money until the game pass though.

20 dollar Skins for a first person shooter are to me the most Emperor’s new clothes thing ever. I’m not buying skins for other people. I’m buying them for me. I could care less what you see when you see my character. Also not buying 20 dollar weapon skins lol. As soon as that season pass comes out though I’m all in. Love this game.

Unpopular opinion maybe, but mozambique and p2020 are fine. Ok, maybe up mozambique magazine size to 4 or 5, but other than that… they’re starter weapons that have high spawn rate and are meant for match start, so it only makes sense that they’re weak. I’ve downed plenty of people with a mozambique simply because I found one within seconds after landing and they didn’t have a weapon yet.
