Elite: Dangerous prepares to move to new forums and announces a planetary expedition

The community of Elite: Dangerous is going to be pretty busy in the next few days. On the one hand, there are plans for a new in-game expedition event, while on the other hand there are some new forums to migrate to.

The folks at Frontier have provided a game plan for the forum migration. The forums will go down on Monday, March 25th, for about three days’ time. A number of existing forums like console-specific Off Topic forums and Factions forums will be taken offline, while several other forums will be merged in to new locations. The Bug Reports forum is also changing to be read-only, but players can still file bug reports through a new dedicated bug reporting site.

On the community event side of things, SRV pilots are preparing for a circumnavigation of the planet Kumay in the Chi Herculis system. The event is tentatively set to begin on Wednesday, March 27th, though the most recent post explains that date might be more nebulous. The expedition is suspected to take about a month to complete; those interested in finding out more should check out the event post for all the details and relevant links.

I’d rather do Distant Worlds twice back to back than circumnavigate a low G planet in an SRV.

Maybe this sort of thing should have been added and discussed in the Designed Downtime article. I don’t know, maybe there will be more to it than just traveling and trying to stay in one piece for a month?

I understand there is a challenge involved with completing it, but that can be said of just about any sort of downtime activity.

It will be interesting to see if there is more to it than initially described.

I think to a big part it is a game of exploration so not sure how it fits on that discussion. I think only other mmo game where explorer is a viable “occupation” is the sea based Uncharted Waters? not sure but that is what comes to mind. UWO though makes it different approach than space games as you go to also search and catalogue ancient things, wildlife etc etc

Certainly exploration can be a major part of any good MMO. But days, weeks, even months? With the possibility of not being able to complete the task, even at the last second? In addition, there is not much ‘exploration’ involved if all one is doing is traveling from point A to point B and just trying to survive the many, many hours of boredom in between.

To me, this is the quintessential definition of Designed Downtime. I really don’t see it as much different than Classic EQ sit and meditate after every fight to regen health and/or mana. Meditation just takes place in shorter, more frequent bursts; but it is still sitting and doing basically nothing.

I think Wildstar had a great idea in its experiment with exploration and the other tasks you mention. Unfortunately, they shortchanged it to focus on stuff no one was really interested in. FFXIV has a similar type of alternative exploration/catalogue exp model, but it also is not taken far enough, in my thinking.

And you thought traveling across a planet in SWG was long.
