The Daily Grind: What’s the most creative class in all of the MMO genre?

I have long held that Wakfu offers the most original and indeed truly unique classes across the entire span of the MMO genre, but this week, I’ve started to think that Aion, of all games, might be giving Ankama a run for its money. With the launch of 7.0 in the EU version of Aion this week, the MMO’s Artist class got a new spec: the Painter. Painters literally paints to “fend off their opponents with Paint Rings that fire paint at the enemy” – big ol’ splashes of color. How cute is this? I can’t say as I’ve ever seen anything like that before, but damn, I’d love to. How many of y’all are sick of the same old warrior, priest, mage, scout archetypes?

What would you say is the most original, creative, or unique class in all of the MMO genre? Yes I know you can’t have the “most unique,” but you know what I mean! Let’s gather all the best ones up here!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Oh, boy! I reflexively cringed at the mere mention of NCsoft.

However, with their continual vague stares in the opposite direction of the CoX private servers whilst collectively mumbling, “C-oh-what?” instead of “C&Ds!,” I may have to actually start supporting their games again, Chinese-gold-farmers-and-lag-infestations-be-darned!

Wow! Did I just type that?! And it was right as a pig flew by overhead and everything!

Anarchy Online to me has the most creative classes because of the sifi setting and Nanotechnology.

Masterminds from City of Heroes. No other pet class comes close to the variety, pet control and team support abilities of the MM.

Blue Mage from FFXI was super unique and fun to play. Learning spells from mobs/bosses throughout the world to create your own spell kit.

Chanter from Aion is probably my all time favorite and definitely creative/unique. You’re not quite dps, not quite a healer, but some how the perfect balance for a hybrid support and still being wanted in a group. Debuffs, auras, backup heals, CC, enough dps to get by. Absolutely loved it.

Puppeteer in Mabinogi. I know Mabi isn’t the only MMO to have some sort of puppet job (like FFXI), but the way it actually played certainly was quite unique.

While the marionette was attached to your control bars, you essentially controlled it directly while your character followed behind. Certain attacks could also send your marionette flying in a spinning attack, causing the strings to break and detach from your control bars (you could also detach your marionette at will). You could then follow that up with switching to another weapon and do an attack of your own or even attack with the control bars themselves before re-attaching the now lifeless marionette crumpled on the ground back to your bars.

SWG’s entertainer class/skills were fairly creative as well. I’d love to see another MMO take on something similar. FFXIV’s Dancer kind of does this with how it strings together dance steps for Standard and Technical Finishes.
