Zombie horror MMO Dead Frontier 2 morphs into a fully open world title

This game continues to surprise us. Back in September of 2018, we were alerted to the existence of Dead Frontier 2, a free-to-play survival horror MMO that brought in a whole bunch of features while having the audacity to call itself an MMO. Fast-forward to now and the game’s most recent update, which effectively transforms Dead Frontier 2 into a fully open world game.

Players will now get to explore a large procedurally generated map. Lobby multiplayer mode will work the same as before, except all eight players are dropped into the larger map, while MMO mode draws from instances of 32 players, with the game automatically changing instances during loading screens if players haven’t seen anyone else for a while, to try and match up nearby people together.

This new open world also changes several fundamentals to Dead Frontier 2 gameplay, with a new building type, a large red PvP zone replacing the Killing Grounds, and six daily outpost attacks every four hours, with each outpost getting attacked twice per day for a total of 20 minutes.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to warn you that the Open World update is a massive change,” wrote one of the devs on the eve of the update. “I’ve literally rewritten about 1/4 of the game’s code to make this happen, and therefore there are bound to be all sorts of issues, ranging from bugs, to lag and balancing issues. Therefore I imagine that things may be a little chaotic in the first few days. All I can say is please be patient, and know that whatever happens I’ll be working round the clock to get the game stable & balanced ASAP.”

Make sure to take a look over the patch notes for all of the new details, and check out reader HikariKenzaki’s stream of the new update embedded below.
