Must we?

You know it’s a new-gen console year when every game in town is making big promises about longevity, and Epic Games’ Fortnite reveals today demonstrate that.

“Today we’re excited to confirm that Fortnite will be headed to next-generation consoles at launch,” the studio says. “This is the same Fortnite you know and love, ready to take full advantage of the newest consoles. We’ll be sharing more specific details in the coming months as we get closer to launch.”

The company stresses that it’s the same game, though it’ll be build with UE4 initially and “migrate” to UE5 in 2021. Cross-play, as well as full cross-progression and carry-over for existing accounts, are among the features being promised, and it sounds as if the old platforms won’t be abandoned, at least immediately.

Epic has also posted a new video showing off UE5 itself and released Epic Online Services for developers.
