The Daily Grind: What’s your most embarrassing MMO character name?

By chance, MOP’s Carlo struck up a conversation among our team a week ago all about embarrassing character names and gaming handles. Apparently he was teasing a friend for his “xxXLegolasXxx”-style name, when his wife slammed him hard by teasing him for his old handle: TWISTING FANGS. It’s a Guild Wars skill name, but he cringed anyway. Ah, marriage!

Anyhow, it turns out most of us are guilty, and our team had a good time roasting each other for our really dumb online names. I’ve confessed my sins before: When I was a teenager, I used to name my MMO characters after obscure Wheel of Time characters. But some of my colleagues turn out to have far worse examples, so I feel slightly less embarrassed. Slightly.

How about you? What’s your most embarrassing MMO character name?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I had a Draenei in wow called Horney.

Most cringeworthy I have seen are often healers names .. Mcheals, heals you, keepu alive, heeluass, etc.

Funniest healer name I saw today was WillHealForTacos. Dumb? Yes. But I snickered anyway. :-)

I’ve made it sort of my hobby within a hobby to screenshot as many terrible names as i can in the various MMORPG’s i’ve played over the years.

“Squall DiCaprio” ranks up there on the cringeworthy meter hall of fame.

What’s wrong with Legolas as a base name? I’m quite proud of my Froglok in EQ2, name of Froglegolas.

Firecheeks, my bright wizard and main from WAR. It was some joke stripper name from a sitcom I watched around that time, I thought it was funny and appropriate. Thankfully I snagged a chance to rename her for free when they were doing server mergers.

I had a male character with a giant afro (blonde) that I called “Seventies Bush.” More recently a bumblee looking fellow that put to sleep villains in City of Heroes named “Cosbee.” And a wee lad that was dressed in all green with shamrocks that summons zombies named “Leper Khan.” Oh wait, I missed the point of this. I’m not embarrassed about any of those names.

I have a gnome Mage in WoW named Jingleballs. Inspiration for that character I was watching the Christmas movie Jingle all the Way with Arnold and him saying Jingle all da Way!.

None, really. Due to the way I name characters — and, in particular, the fact I aim for lore-friendly names — it would be highly unlikely for me to end up with a name I would be embarrassed with.

Also, a quick Google search will usually ferret out any inappropriateness in the name. So you don’t end up like Studio Ghibli, which released an animated movie named “Laputa” after the flying island in Gulliver’s Travels, not knowing that Jonathan Swift had named that island after the Spanish word for prostitute…

Way back in the days of City of Heroes…, and it wasn’t even an embarrassing name. More like a “… no I can’t do this..” name. An Ice / Energy blaster, themed to look like a grungy old fisherman. Name? Ice Fission.

Played for all of a week, but one too many fishing related puns killed me. I had to stop.
