Over the past few years we’ve seen the trend of a lot of survival sandbox games ebb and flow. These games are smaller than a full MMO, with the emphasis being on everyone getting put into a small world together to mine, build structures, tame things, and so forth in order to not starve. Or freeze. Or drown. Or get eaten. Or have a neighbor decide “hey, your hovel looks nicer than mine, I’mma just take that” and introduce a spear to your trachea. You know the general sort.
Some games in this loose genre manage to gain quite the following, from ARK: Survival Evolved to Valheim to Conan Exiles. Others don’t make much of an impact at all, sometimes floundering immediately upon reaching early access. (They are always going into early access, and maybe they will actually launch.) Have you ever been inclined to try out a survival sandbox game? Or are these experiences the exact opposite of what you want in an actual MMO?
