Not the kind of horror they meant.

As a whole, horror is a rather underserved genre in MMOs in general because it’s hard to be particularly horrified in a game where the whole idea is getting stronger over time. You aren’t all that scared of zombies when you can effortless mow through seven dozen of them by sneezing hard. But there are still zones in a lot of MMOs that wind up being subtly disturbing by virtue of environmental details or other elements.

WildStar had zones full of corruption and eyeballs. World of Warcraft had the Plaguelands at launch and the eerie stillness of Silithus before it had been populated with quests. And that’s not getting into zones like Final Fantasy XIV‘s Tempest that suddenly hit you with “here’s a recreation of a dead city.” So what’s your favorite disquieting MMO zone? Maybe not one that’s meant to be explicitly horrifying but that still winds up there?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
