The Daily Grind: What’s the most excessive whaling you’ve ever seen in an MMO?

Every time I think whaling in the MMO industry can’t get any worse, some game comes along and proves me wrong. That was the case last year when Diablo Immortal launched and people figured out the absurd amount of money it would take to cap out. It was so bad that the Diablo IV devs had to rush out and promise (what were at the time their future) players they wouldn’t do the same thing.

I have to say I’m not at all sympathetic to those huge “be a king and lord over everyone else if and when we launch” packages crowdfunded games often offer. I don’t like the thought of people being swindled when those games inevitably don’t launch, but at the same time, a mean part of me thinks the type of people who buy those kinda had it coming.

What’s the most excessive whaling you’ve ever seen in an MMO? I don’t mean just in terms of an individual dollar amount, since a lot of whaling is done in smaller increments over time. Gimme examples!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
