If you heard the earth-shattering rumble of millions of Diablo fans cheering in approval, it’s probably because the news came out that Blizzard is bringing back the fan-favorite Runewords system to the franchise with this fall’s Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred.

In last night’s developer livestream, Blizzard said that expansion owners will be able to equip two Runewords at a time. The goal for these was to “retain the soul” of the Diablo II system that combined socketable components to create powerful items and useful spells.

Testing for the October expansion will commence on September 2nd with the full 2.0 update on the PTR. There’s a whole lot more than just Runewords with this patch, too; Diablo IV is adding masterwork materials, glyph upgrades, more skills, more passives, more legendaries, account-wide paragon points, revamped difficulty tiers, and other character progression overhauls.
