Soulframe deep-dives the changes to its next pre-alpha build and discusses multiplayer feature plans

Two words: butterfly backstab

The pre-alpha “preludes” build of Soulframe is headed for its seventh iteration, and this update is a pretty beefy one as it changes several aspects of the action RPG, which means that the latest developer video digest has a lot of ground to cover.

The features outlined in this vlog are nothing particularly new if you watched Digital Extremes’ broadcast from Tokyo Game Show, and the granularity (and terminology for that matter) seems to mostly be aimed at existing pre-alpha testers. Even so, there is plenty of information for those outside looking in, such as adjustments to combat animations and stagger mechanics, a new open world event, some new moves (you can turn into a butterfly to sneak up on enemies and backstab them), and adjustments to character progression that’s tied to weapon usage.

Other updates in the build include some changes to unlocking certain NPC features, crafted weapon updates that include reduced damage for items used without the right virtues and tier unlock requirements, and five new weapons coming. Unfortunately, those in the test will see their weapon ranks reset, so that will have to be earned all over again.

Finally – and most important to us and our readers – the Q&A segment answered several questions about multiplayer in Soulframe: The game is being built to support four-player groups, the next pre-alpha build should have a social hub, and there are plans for players to see the “souls” of others playing nearby, at which point players can send out group invites to see if they want to join in on quests.
