The Daily Grind: How much homework do you do coming into a new MMO?

Recently, I’ve re-entered the world of Guild Wars 2 after a quite lengthy absence. But I’ve done it in a different way than before, which started when I paused to recognize that I didn’t fully understand the gameplay loops, various goals, and quirky systems.

So I devoted a couple of evenings to watching a lot of videos and reading articles devoted to bringing players like me up to speed. I even made lists of goals because lists are what I do these days. By the end of it, I felt a lot of the haze of confusion lift from the game, and I charged into it with a lot more excitement than I would otherwise.

Do you ever do something like this when you return to an MMO after a long break or head into one for the first time? How much “homework” do you do on an MMO before you start playing it?
