Old School RuneScape will take a hard stance against ‘deathmatching’ in its rules August 15

Old School RuneScape has often been used as fertile soil for RMT shenanigans, particularly in the case of its duel arena feature, which was being used as an RMT hot spot to the point that it was completely replaced. Of course, that didn’t stop players from using 1v1 PvP as a way to stake gold or items in an activity called “deathmatching,” which developer Jagex says is almost always associated with RMT, so now the studio is putting its foot down.

On Thursday, August 15th, all deathmatching activities will fall under the Games of Chance section of illicit activities in the MMORPG’s rules, which will result in a three-day ban and wealth removal for first offenders, followed by a permanent ban and wealth removal for repeated offenses.

“Admittedly, it has taken us some time to get to this point, but there has been good reason for it,” Jagex explains. “Just as people moved from the Duel Arena to PvP worlds doing what they do now, we’d expect them to do the same thing if we clamped down on it in public spaces. […] [W]e’ve been working hard to ensure that we have a robust system in place to accurately detect and punish players participating in this activity, wherever they may be within Gielinor, and we’re now ready to start acting against those involved.”
