In a dev video this past week, Lord of the Rings Online’s lead designer said that plans for that MMO in 2025 are “in a much better state” than what’s happened in 2024, with four major content releases planned for next year. While the devs were a little cagey about future plans, they did tease several projects that are in the works including a large “estate” system for player housing, improvements to the virtue system, and a way to help players manage several alts.
For LOTRO historians, it’s interesting to hear how some of the devs were working on a “SMITE-like” project around the time of the Riders of Rohan expansion. While the nature of the project wasn’t fully explained (such as whether it was a spin-off MOBA or a unique game mode), the devs said that the project was canned and they were reassigned to Turbine’s ill-fated Infinite Crisis soon thereafter.
For now, LOTRO is entering the Legacy of Morgoth era, with a series of upcoming previews planned over the next month that will lead up to the big fall expansion pack.
