Rumor: Bungie’s Marathon will cost $40 and is aiming for a 2025 release

News about Bungie’s new-look version of Marathon has been pretty thin, which isn’t really a surprise considering layoffs at Bungie last year delayed the shooter’s launch and its former director was reportedly fired over misconduct. That means gamers are once again left to rely on reporting from an insider source to Forbes, who provides some fresh scuttlebutt about the developing title.

First, it would seem like the extraction shooter is leaning harder into hero character gameplay similar to Apex Legends: Characters have unique abilities such as double-jumping or turning invisible, while customization like skill trees and ability implants are reportedly in development. That said, finding and escaping with unique guns and gear will still be a major factor in character power. The game will also keep its extremely distinctive visual style, which the insider says was extremely well-received.

The anonymous source also claims that Bungie is aiming to release Marathon in 2025. Most of that is thanks to pressure from Sony, which is likely only increasing after Destiny 2’s publicized stumbles – and despite the fact that most devs tied to the project are not exactly brimming with optimism; some have reportedly even walked away.

When Marathon does release, it will be a buy-to-play game priced at $40, along with additional monetization schemes in the form of a cosmetics shop and a battle pass. More details are likely to be shared sometime in spring of 2025, particularly since many within the game’s team are apparently very eager to get the shooter in front of players.
