The Daily Grind: Should more MMOs adopt a ‘reincarnation’ feature to reboot your character?

Dungeons and Dragons Online has a feature that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in any other MMORPGs. Higher-level players may elect to reincarnate their character at any time, effectively resetting their progress back to the start in exchange for more build points and extra feats. So you go back to the start, but now you’ve got the potential for an even stronger character.

As someone who considers the leveling journey more interesting than the endgame, the idea of a reincarnation feature greatly appeals to me, and I wonder how it might work in other MMORPGs.

What do you think? Could a reincarnation/reboot option fit into your MMO? What incentives would there have to be to make it worth your while to restart your character’s journey?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
