Wild West Online announced for later this year, Kickstarter coming soon

If you’ve been wishing for horses and western MMORPGs, then saddle up par’dner — we’re about to ride off into a glorious sunrise.

PC Gamer got the exclusive scoop on a brand-new MMO in development called Wild West Online, which is slated for a late 2017 release. In a nutshell, WWO is Red Dead Redemption made massively multiplayer, a project tackled by devs who were frustrated that this sort of game hadn’t happened yet. It will be an open-world PvP title with lawmen, bandits, gambling, prospecting, bounty hunting, and bank heists.

The game is being developed by a brand-new studio, 612 Games, which contains veterans from League of Legends and Crysis. So far, only broad strokes are being used to describe the game and its features, as some parts (like how progression will be handled) haven’t been decided yet. It does sound as though Wild West Online will be far more PvP-oriented and not a cookie-cutter MMO, lacking elements like fights against NPCs and any announced questing system.

Stephan Bugaj, the creative vice president of publisher DJ2, said that this type of game has been a long time coming: “There’s an audience for this that just wasn’t being served on PC. So we wanted to make this big, open wild west world with a bit of a twist that, like the best MMOs, is a place where people can really live in.”

The website is running a 14-day countdown to more details, which will probably coincide with Wild West Online’s planned Kickstarter at the end of May. The studio is seeking $250,000 or more to help flesh out the core game with more features, such as playable female characters (yup, they don’t come standard) and train robberies.

So what do you think? Is this the western MMO we’ve been hoping for? Does this team sound nervous about making the game too much like an MMORPG? Sound off in the comments!

Whil no females at launch might be odd. At least it’s not like most Asian MMO’s where there is one or two male characters, and then they only release female ones. *Looking at you TERA*

Reader
Harlow Games

I’d be interested just out of familiarity with the area and time period, in addition to WestWorld envy, but why wouldn’t they have female characters? Absolutely moronic. It sucks having to play male characters in practically every non-MMO.

All the PVP crying…
To me PVP makes games more interesting, but I don’t really care either way.
It just seems to me the “wild west” would have to have PVP or it would be more of a “mild west”.

Less like “wild west” and more like “murder world”.

Depends on how they do it. I’m all for a bounty system for gankers, safe zones, toggle-able PVP flagging etc. but I think pure PVE servers are Zzzzzz booorrrriiinnnngggg

I’ll back this project if they promise to keep playable female characters out of the game.

Maybe WestWorld inspired some folks that there’s money to be made in a wild west game setting. I’m going to throw more hopes at Amazon’s New World.

Too bad this game is missing anything that would make it worth me playing it as an MMORPG. Funny how games that have more right to the acronym (in my opinion), want to get away from it while this game, more deserving of the survivalist shooter genre, wants to use it.

Sounds like a great idea for an MMO, but man, I’m really getting tired of all these “soon-to-be-kickstarted” games that you know probably won’t be ready to actually play for three or four years – if they even get funded in the first place. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m not getting any younger. And no need to remind me that these kinds of things take a long time – I know that – I guess I’m just saying that I wish we had more great MMO’s to choose from NOW. ;)

Reader

I’ve never been overly fond of the wild West settings but I am glad to see something being made since there isn’t anything like this currently. Though I will say the “end of the year” seems unrealistic for a release based on what I can see. Hopefully they are just withholding info for now.

Reader
Harlow Games

At least it isn’t another high fantasy/medieval Europe setting.

Reader
Dug From The Earth

Its about damn time someone ventures into this setting.

It could be amazing if done right.

IE:

– No Moba elements
– No Cry-engine
– No Unity
– Not another survival game

I would have been doing cartwheels about this as Wild West is one genre I have been longing for an MMO about.. but then I reached the line “open world PVP” and all my joy and interest disappeared…

Seriously another niche soon to be forgotten pvp sandbox like the gajillions of others folks no longer remember.

Reader
Baemir

Yeah because PvE themeparks are totally dominating the videogame industry right now.

Reader
NeoWolf

Hmm lets look how many PVE games are around and going strong.. and yet how many pvp sandboxes are there that come and go? I rest my case lol

At any rate my comment relates to MY personal preference in games and what I am looking for, you don’t need to share it or agree with it, my tastes are just that MINE ;)

Wish I was more of an entrepreneur, I have all my notes still for a pretty robust and ambitious American West MMO. I had at least a dozen classes (blacksmith, sawbones, undertaker, gunslinger, marshall, trapper, gambler, cowboy, saloon girl/bartender, scout, miner, lots of roles that did things people would need) and their Indian counterparts I gave Indian names that approximated those professions, like, Sawbones (doctor) would be called a SANI (Navajo for “old one”, Gambler would be called WAHYA (Cherokee for “wolf”, fits rogue nature), Saloon Girl would be EHAWEE (Lakota for “laughing woman”) .

About three dozen skills, and each class would have a desirable skill at level 1 (Cowboys/Braves would start with a horse, but the other classes would have to earn one for example). Mostly faction vs faction but only in certain “battleground” zones would there be open PvP. Otherwise all-consensual-dueling.

I pondered over making the Gunslinger an uber class, but, one that would risk permadeath. Sometimes gunslingers got shot down.

The Old West had plenty of lore and legend. Haunted mines. Ghost towns. Indian magic against settler technology. There would be enough ‘magic’ in the world to make it fun.

I haven’t forgotten about Amazon’s New World. Hopefully it will have more of your elements.

Reader
Harlow Games

New World sounds amazing, especially considering the immense amount of talent AGS has sniped from pretty much every major developer.

I don’t get the impression of the Wild West though, IIRC it’s more early-colonial, east coast meets supernatural beings of the forest, etc.

camren_rooke
Reader
camren_rooke

Gunslingers can only be permakilled by other gunslingers? Justa thought.

It really does have the seeds of an interesting idea. Mebbe massively folks can point you to someone in the industry to talk about it?

Reader
Melissa McDonald

yes, exactly, it would be an ‘extreme PvP’ option, but a consensual duel between Gunslinger class players. Big reward, big risk.
Thank you for the compliment, but I think the game I envision would be too hard for the current crop of MMO Lite / Sandbox devs. They just don’t seem to even think that way anymore.

It sounds to me like Eve Online in the old West — but with EVERYTHING being NullSec and a lack of any NPC missions to boot. Just create the minimum number of viable systems to let the sheep have something to do in between the wolves ganking them and relieving them of the fruits of their efforts.

Nah, that couldn’t possibly be a train wreck, now could it?

Yeah lets make it open world pvp. Then we don’t have to create real content. Then we add p2w items in a cash shop and make boat loads of money off the suckers that play the game.

Reader

You mean real content like the same shitty, repetitive single player quest nonsense with awful predictable “stories” that would get every other RPG laughed at, we’ve been getting for the last 10 years? Oh yeah what a great shame indeed…

Do kind of wonder if they will include Native Americans of any stripe?

It’s one thing to include Nazi’s or generic ‘bandits’ in your game but putting in ‘Injuns’ might not go over too well.

I think so, but New World is earlier; coastal tribes vs. Conquistadors. Dark magic as well. Really looking forward to that game, too.

Conquistadors? I thought it was focused on early colonists? On the east coast of North America?

Reader

It’s not like historical accuracy ever matters in these games… I’m not sure why it suddenly should because the subject is native americans. I mean I can easily point out five historical inaccuracies in those screenshots listed above without even looking too closely. Is that a problem?

camren_rooke
Reader
camren_rooke

I would agree with you buuuut…. news reports of Wild West MMO has players murdering Native Americans make for great headlines.

and Native Americans also frequently have their culture misappropriated so they might get backlash there too.

Reader
Apollymi

WTF with constant parade of pvp only games.

Reader
Sorenthaz

To be fair the Wild West would be a good setting for open PvP -WITH CONSEQUENCES-.
But yeah PvP is a cheap option vs PvE. PvE actually requires frequent updates to keep people satiated.

Reader
CloakingDonkey .

It’s also much harder to make interesting… I mean at this point it should be pretty clear that WoW clones aren’t getting people excited anymore.. and with RDR2 there already is a game with more story coming.

camren_rooke
Reader

Or at least some way for folks to create their own content. Mission creators and the like.

While the idea of a cowboy mmo is really appealing to me, i have to say, the thing i want MOST is Fallen Earth to be updated and out of maintenance mode.

I just like Postapoc mmos similar to Fallout. I really want a company to buy FE and be passionate about it.

Reader
Jason Clearwater

Yes, a post-apocalyptic MMO needs to be developed next along the lines of Gamma World or Fallen Earth.

Reader
BalsBigBrother

I think the folks who made Fallen Earth were (are) passionate about it. Sadly I think a lack of resources blunted what they could do with the passion. It was a fun game but also as you imply also a missed opportunity :-(

Reader
Bruno Brito

I won’t discuss the passion they had. The developers for G1C shredded the game.

Reader

Sounds cool, although if it’s PvP only will there actually be much to do? Anyway if it breaks the mold of traditional MMOs that’s cool. I’ll give it a try.

Not a fan of a studio making a game then asking for extra on Kickstarter though.

Reader
nobleeinherjar

Color me interested. But like Crowfall and a handful of other MMOs that haven’t released yet, I don’t plan on following its development.

If RDR2 implements a Wild West version of GTAO (which I’m hoping they do), it will be interesting to see how the two games stack up.

Well if they’re going to do women they have to do them right. They have to do danty lady jumps, supermodel walks, gravity defying cleavage (which could cause pc specs to be pushed up higher) and clothing has to be upgraded to about twenty thousand new articles all of which shows how much the breast defy gravity. Very difficult stuff.

Why did you not mention the massive elephant in the room here? They’re not creating females as playable characters.

One stretch goal that has me scratching my head is the first one, where if DJ2 raises $400,000 they’ll include women as playable characters. While I’m sympathetic to the development strains of an indie MMO, it’s puzzling to have gender equality locked behind a stretch goal—especially after Ubisoft’s excuses for why no playable women were in Assassin’s Creed Unity rang so hollow. When I brought this particular stretch goal up with the team, they said they were already aware that it’s a sensitive issue but doing it properly was simply beyond their resources at this time.

I guess women aren’t important enough to them to bother creating one simple character model. We’re a huge part of the gaming community, MMO’s especially, and we like all kinds of different games. A lot of us are even big PvP fans. It’s insulting.

Reader

Therein lies the problem. How many other female scouts can you name? Martha Jane Canary was a pioneer.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

There in lies the problem with you claim. History books says, “There was women?”

Reader
Bruno Brito

Doesn’t matter. They existed, they weren’t as heroic, so weren’t a lot of men in that time.

It’s a game. We’re in 2017. Let the gals be outlaws and peacekeepers, or fodder too.

Reader
Denice J. Cook

I think the real problem there is that every piece of armor and every animation (spells/attacks/walking etc., everything) will have to be redone for female bodies.

This is a common restriction with small/indie dev teams and often encompasses racial locking too, and it’s becoming the norm even with bigger outfits like Tera/Bluehole Studios and Black Desert Online so that new classes can launch faster. Haven’t you noticed how fast Tera and BDO in particular are able to crank out new classes these days? It’s actually awesome, and a big draw for many players.

Personally, I’m a female too, and it does bother me sometimes, however if I’m forced to choose between getting new classes faster with gender/race locking or waiting forever for new classes/skills because of the increased animation/armor creation times, I’ll take the gender/racial locking any day.

At the end of the day, you really only see the back of your character’s head most of the time.

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

and that’s the thing. and it’s the whole of the thing. it’s not misogyny or hating women or w/e bullshit. it just comes down to the cost involved.

i say that as someone who only plays female toons. and generally wants more video game characters that are bad ass women wether player created or dev created.

but i can still admit it’s costly to have all those different models and rigging and animation sets. rather unfortunately but thems the breaks.

i do hope they meet the stretch goal and get us some wimminz toons tho.

Reader
Manastu Utakata

In TERA, at the end of the day, I only see the back of my characters’ tails actually. o.O

But I digress… as I personally think this is a poor excuse. As it equally could play as cutting corners and “couldn’t be bothered, so let’s throw the lady types under the bus.” However, I am pretty sure this game would suck without the lack of female NPC’s. Most MMO’s would. Thusly, if they can animate those, then the next step would to make them PC’s.

camren_rooke
Reader
camren_rooke

That’s why you should play Amani, the best race in Tera. No tails.

Reader

I never said tails where a bad thing. I just see more on my characters there then the backs on their heads…especially where a 5th appendage is concerned. :)
