Wild West Online announced for later this year, Kickstarter coming soon

If you’ve been wishing for horses and western MMORPGs, then saddle up par’dner — we’re about to ride off into a glorious sunrise.

PC Gamer got the exclusive scoop on a brand-new MMO in development called Wild West Online, which is slated for a late 2017 release. In a nutshell, WWO is Red Dead Redemption made massively multiplayer, a project tackled by devs who were frustrated that this sort of game hadn’t happened yet. It will be an open-world PvP title with lawmen, bandits, gambling, prospecting, bounty hunting, and bank heists.

The game is being developed by a brand-new studio, 612 Games, which contains veterans from League of Legends and Crysis. So far, only broad strokes are being used to describe the game and its features, as some parts (like how progression will be handled) haven’t been decided yet. It does sound as though Wild West Online will be far more PvP-oriented and not a cookie-cutter MMO, lacking elements like fights against NPCs and any announced questing system.

Stephan Bugaj, the creative vice president of publisher DJ2, said that this type of game has been a long time coming: “There’s an audience for this that just wasn’t being served on PC. So we wanted to make this big, open wild west world with a bit of a twist that, like the best MMOs, is a place where people can really live in.”

The website is running a 14-day countdown to more details, which will probably coincide with Wild West Online’s planned Kickstarter at the end of May. The studio is seeking $250,000 or more to help flesh out the core game with more features, such as playable female characters (yup, they don’t come standard) and train robberies.

So what do you think? Is this the western MMO we’ve been hoping for? Does this team sound nervous about making the game too much like an MMORPG? Sound off in the comments!

Whil no females at launch might be odd. At least it’s not like most Asian MMO’s where there is one or two male characters, and then they only release female ones. *Looking at you TERA*

I’d be interested just out of familiarity with the area and time period, in addition to WestWorld envy, but why wouldn’t they have female characters? Absolutely moronic. It sucks having to play male characters in practically every non-MMO.

All the PVP crying…
To me PVP makes games more interesting, but I don’t really care either way.
It just seems to me the “wild west” would have to have PVP or it would be more of a “mild west”.

Less like “wild west” and more like “murder world”.

Depends on how they do it. I’m all for a bounty system for gankers, safe zones, toggle-able PVP flagging etc. but I think pure PVE servers are Zzzzzz booorrrriiinnnngggg

I’ll back this project if they promise to keep playable female characters out of the game.

Maybe WestWorld inspired some folks that there’s money to be made in a wild west game setting. I’m going to throw more hopes at Amazon’s New World.

Too bad this game is missing anything that would make it worth me playing it as an MMORPG. Funny how games that have more right to the acronym (in my opinion), want to get away from it while this game, more deserving of the survivalist shooter genre, wants to use it.

Sounds like a great idea for an MMO, but man, I’m really getting tired of all these “soon-to-be-kickstarted” games that you know probably won’t be ready to actually play for three or four years – if they even get funded in the first place. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m not getting any younger. And no need to remind me that these kinds of things take a long time – I know that – I guess I’m just saying that I wish we had more great MMO’s to choose from NOW. ;)

I’ve never been overly fond of the wild West settings but I am glad to see something being made since there isn’t anything like this currently. Though I will say the “end of the year” seems unrealistic for a release based on what I can see. Hopefully they are just withholding info for now.

At least it isn’t another high fantasy/medieval Europe setting.

Its about damn time someone ventures into this setting.

It could be amazing if done right.

IE:

– No Moba elements
– No Cry-engine
– No Unity
– Not another survival game

I would have been doing cartwheels about this as Wild West is one genre I have been longing for an MMO about.. but then I reached the line “open world PVP” and all my joy and interest disappeared…

Seriously another niche soon to be forgotten pvp sandbox like the gajillions of others folks no longer remember.

Yeah because PvE themeparks are totally dominating the videogame industry right now.

Hmm lets look how many PVE games are around and going strong.. and yet how many pvp sandboxes are there that come and go? I rest my case lol

At any rate my comment relates to MY personal preference in games and what I am looking for, you don’t need to share it or agree with it, my tastes are just that MINE ;)

I have to say, the way they took advantage of RDR2 hype has been pretty canny. I hope it pays off for them.
