Guild Wars 2 rethinks the defiance system for Heart of Thorns

Just when you thought it was safe to enter an expansion jungle, think again. The Guild Wars 2 dev team is hard at work making Heart of Thorns as intimidating to the veteran adventurer as possible, and one of its tools is the fearsome wyvern.

The devs used the champion creature as an example of how the expansion’s improved defiance mechanic will work. The new system will show an additional bar under the boss’ health bar that represents its defiance (i.e., anti-crowd control protection). The more CC used on the creature, the more the bar degrades until the creature can be affected by such skills. However, the bar is always regenerating, so player groups will need to hit it fast and frequently to make a difference.

The new system can be used for interesting encounter, such as the wyvern. Players will attempt to stop the creature from taking off by depleting its defiance bar, and if they are successful, they will get a few seconds of free attack time. It may be worth it to let the creature attack you at least a few times, if only to see the wyvern’s “believable” fire effects.

*screams in searing pain*
Ooh, that effect really is quite lovely!
*recommences blood-curdling scream*

Especially other than the hp bar everything else is just excessive particle effects.

What are you talking about – that grind definition is taken from the expansion announcement. They can 10 billion of an item but because you can get it 2 different ways they dont call it grind. 10 billion of anything is a grind. Just like ascended armour.

Silverwastes is zerg content. What content are you talking about? LS is zerg content. EOTM is zerg content.

When you figure out what I just said get back to me.

GleefulGrognard Zuiq Take your frustration elsewhere. Read through this article, this very limited article that says that it is in fact a NEW SYSTEM and not much else. I’m meant to read every article out there? No thanks, I want a correct and to the point article on my site of choice if there is one posted about something I’m interested in.
I actually did read through the official news about 2-3 hour after posting, and guess what? This article contained none of the valuable information what you have pointed out in that one short paragraph.

Go be angry about pugs or something instead, it’s much more productive.

n4tive Give it a try and see if you like it. It’s good to get a head start before the expac because you never know how many people want to crash the servers at that time.

hardy83 Mordremoth is a Plant and Mind Dragon. So he can manipulate the minds of things. Moreso plant creatures like Sylvari who aren’t strong willed. They never state that this Wyvern is under Mordremoth’s control at all, it may just be a thing that’s been disturbed and wants to wreck face just cause.

bryanjturner GleefulGrognard osuracnaes Nope, changes like this have a knockon effect that create a need for the different builds, traitlines and skills out of a pure damage rotation.
Ofcourse parties will ALWAYS be created around how to do the most damage and clear content the fastest, but changes like this defiance change and the other boon changes. This can change how classes see themselves primary role wise and the importance of changing the playstyle during the game.
This also has the knockon effect of making zerker sets less desirable in all situations. Because frankly if fights start to last 2-4 minutes rather than 30 seconds most of the current glass builds will not be able to maintain dps superiority as they aren’t built for sustainability.
We will still see glass builds, we will still see zerker builds, but if arenanet handle this well it will definitely stop them being the optimal set for all content. I believe the revenant trait lines back this up and show that this has been a primary concern for the content creation team behind HoT.
Even seemingly small changes like stability being stacks will effect how a party is constructed rather dramatically. Having bosses that you need to remove defiance before the armour drops (and possibly stopping you from critting them before the armour drops) will change build importance.
I guess as someone who actually does contribute to the build research scene I may have a better grasp of why things are they way they are currently.
I am not saying that things will change dramatically, I am saying that with all the changes combined it does lead into a situation where it is quite possible that it will.

This debate kinda reminds me of weird argument got into last night over at the Smite thread about breasts on Gods. As I proposed Gods don’t really need mammary glands. While some else countered, well men’s imaginations put them there. And so forth…
…I think we can argue inconsistencies about a fire breathing nature dragon till the cows come home. I guess Anet has their own reason for this, as I am sure there many differing theories for this. But in the end, I don’t think there’s any real point to it. :)
