The Daily Grind: Does Guild Wars 2 need mounts?

136

Let me stop you right there: Yes, I know that Guild Wars 2 kinda has mounts. It has a ridable broom and a flying carpet. Pretty soon, we’ll even have gliders.

But when people say they want mounts in Guild Wars 2, a magic carpet ride is not what they have in mind. They want mighty steeds with cool animations, which is a fair request since MMOs as far back as Ultima Online had them. They want horses and dragons and saber cats. It’s Guild Wars 2, so they probably want dolyaks and llamas too.

I’ve never really felt much need for mounts in GW2, though, because of the game’s waypoint system. I’d ride them if we had them, but I wouldn’t want to give up my waypoints to get them, and really I’d much rather the team work on other types of content anyway.

What about you? Do you think Guild Wars 2 needs mounts?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Spacejesus3k  You don’t find teleporting across a continent to take down a monstrous spider-crab-thing fun or epic?

There’s really no need for mounts in GW2. Running across a zone takes 5 minutes and you can wander to your heart’s content. Waypoints are there for people who want to get places quickly, and serve a valuable function that way. Much like airplanes do.  When the point is getting somewhere, players just want to get there.

Caec At which point, most of the current MMO players would stop playing MMOs.
Teleporting is clearly the preference of the majority for a huge number of reasons. What system would you replace them with to allow players to travel across huge zones quickly so they can get to the content they want to play?

People who want to remove player QoL options for what boils down to
personal preference are the worst. Just don’t use waypoints/whatever if
you don’t like them.

farfnarf Caec Who plays video games for realism?

I
don’t get why people are so against teleporting in game. Saying you
can’t stay focused/immersed because somewhere on the map people are
teleporting in and out…what?

I like to ride something, so yes.

Mounts certainly aren’t necessary, but they can add flavor to a game that helps keep people’s interest. I’ve always liked the idea of including mounted combat as well, but I’m guessing that would require considerably more effort. Still, it could be fun, particularly in WvW.

Caec So basically, mounts would be a better alternative to waypoints. I agree.

Do you walk everywhere in real life?  If you created a medieval-esque virtual world, mounts would be an unrealistic option?  Sound logic.
Mounts make it a more believable virtual world.  Waypoints are idiotic and kill immersion and believability.

Dumb question.  It’s not a matter of “need”.  No MMO “needs” mounts, it’s a matter of enriching gameplay, as well as giving players options and something else to work for.

Also, they already have mounts in GW2 although, they’re silly mounts, which from my experience is exactly what players didn’t want.  No one asked for a riding broom, or a magic carpet, but you know, it’s Anet as usual, operating in a vacuum.

Humorously, every argument against having mounts has been overwritten by Anet’s own actions.  Far too many waypoints, encouraging us to skip over content, and implementing cheesy cash shop mounts that serve no functional purpose aside from continuing to make the game look like an asian f2p game.

Until GW2 implements mounts, housing, and more RP mechanics, I will not consider it an MMORPG.  When you look closely at it, GW2 is really just an open world adventure game because of it’s limited MMORPG content.

id prefer a reduction of waypoints and the addition of mounts.i dont understand the people saying mounts aren’t immersive, as if popping out of nowhere right where you need to be is somehow

no. If they’re purely cosmetic and banned from WvW the way the carpet etc is then I’m fine. But other than that, no.
