ArenaNet addresses Guild Wars 2 pre-purchase controversy

The Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns pre-purchase announcement sent the community into a state of agitation, to put it mildly. This was exacerbated by a silence on the part of ArenaNet, a silence which has been broken today as the studio addressed the various related issues head-on in a new post.

For starters, ArenaNet announced that it will be adding a free character slot to all veteran players who had registered their accounts before January 23, 2015. This means that players looking to roll up a new Revenant come the expansion will not have to worry about space issues.

The studio clarified its stance on how it’s been marketing the game as of late, saying that it did not intend to deceive players. For those who bought the core game over the past few months thinking that it was required for the expansion, ArenaNet said that it will be offering refunds or a new character slot, depending on where the game was purchased.

Finally, ArenaNet said that all future Guild Wars 2 expansion purchases will include the core game and previous expansions bundled together.

how does this add up a $10 character slot after paying $100 for gw2 on release and then $50 for the xpak when everyone just now buying gets both games for $50?

breetoplay Xephyr Telos_ cardosy oh of course, and when so many people are raging you definitely don’t want to word it wrong and piss off even more people. I think they came up with a good solution for everyone though.

Xephyr Telos_ cardosy Must be nice, right? :D (Seriously, I’m not reaaalllly sure this is an excuse; it wouldn’t be for us, and we’re just a blog. Also I’d bet good money people were working on the wording of that announcement the whole weekend.)

kgptzac No, he doesn’t realize it. He is the king of selective reading because as long as he just reads the neutral posts as positive and the negative posts as invisible, he gets to keep preaching on about ethics or something.
Sinaptic http://massivelyop.com/2015/06/18/why-guild-wars-2s-prepurchase-deal-has-the-internet-raging/ Here you go, delivered with a bow. Now seriously, stop posting this — it’s not only inaccurate but violates our code of conduct, and I’m tired of deleting it.

Superbrak Serrenity I’m gonna get it.  There’s no other game out there even trying to do what GW2 does.  It’s not perfect, but at least it’s different.

Dookii It was less than a week, in a middle of the largest gaming convention of the year.  They responded in a totally timely manner.

TomTurtle kgptzac Exactly. kgptzac Remember though that not all players are as much focused on classes as they are on skills. I for one would be happy if they made extensive additions to each class’s skillset and abilities so that one could rather specialise and have more variation within a class. If they do it well, it could be better than shoehorning in a new class that overlaps with existing classes anyway.

kgptzac breetoplay groo the wanderer The problem is though that the price point was already set by NCSoft in January and of course they’re not the ones who frequently interact with the players. Then Anet’s marketing department pushed them to reveal the pre-purchases at E3 for extra publicity (maybe quite a bit earlier than they had wanted to) and then… explosions happened.

I don’t think what Anet did was blatantly anti-consumer – after all, HoT for new players is a FANTASTIC deal. There just wasn’t due concern for how the older players would feel.
