Final Fantasy XI’s producer bids farewell to the community

After 13 years of development, Final Fantasy XI finally received its final major story update today with the November Version Update. Producer Akhiko Matsui took the occasion to say a few words to the community, emphasizing that this update is not a death knell but a celebration of the game’s long life and active playerbase. The servers will remain on, and minor updates will continue through and beyond April 2016. It’s just that the active story is saying farewell.

Matsui went on to state that the game’s staff will be planning a campaign to welcome back former players who have yet to experience the story and reward those who have been playing all along. He offers his thanks to the community that has kept the game running and rewarding for such a long time. It’s a send-off, yes, but it’s one in a positive spirit.

Square Enix I thank you. FFXI will always be a major part of my MMO experience! You did it well and I bid you farewell. If it wasn’t for FFXI I would not have learned the art of grouping with others, the art of magic bursting and how enjoyable playing with others can feel. In the day of selfish MMOs and disguising MMOs as single player RPGs I say ….. “thank you” to a true MMO legend as FFXI!

So uh… What’s happening to the subscription price?
If the game is going into maintenance mode, then it’s not really all that ethical to be charging the same old price for access.

chosenxeno JudgeDavid101 Actually its decline came as they moved further away from that. It isn’t bad, it just isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

shaw sbst why would they do that?  I mean if they hate making money i guess they could do that.

JudgeDavid101 Ah. So that’s why it declined. Forced grouping is bad. One thing I like about hub based F2Ps is, if I spend enough money, I don’t need other people. My skill alone determines my success or failure. Oh what a feeling!

shaw sbst Perhaps when WoW’s Playerbase sinks to XI levels. Right now there’s no need to.

I’m really going to have to go back and give this another play through one last time on a new character.  It’s been so long, but it’s still wonderful to see after all these years, it still got care and attention.  While it’s sad to see the development for it wind down, I’m still so happy to see they’ll be supporting it well past that mark.

*salutes all the fans who managed to stick to the game all those years*
I wish I had gotten into the game from the get-go. I remember reading about it in the old EGM…13 years, wow.

Take a lesson Blizzard. This is how you bid farewell to WoW, and get on making WoW2.
