RIFT’s next update embraces winter’s wrath

Fret not, RIFT players: Trion Worlds’ fantasy title has one last big update in store for you before the year runs out.

Yesterday RIFT revealed the first details for its upcoming Patch 3.5: Winter’s Wrath. The update will contain a new tier of PvP gear and streamlined PvP quests, as well as a daily reward program for patron players. Trion is also making improvements to its crafting and wardrobe systems, including the new option to customize weapon special effects.

Patch 3.5 will trigger the return of Fae Yule, RIFT’s holiday celebration. It won’t be the same-old event from years of yore, however, as there will be a new instant adventure for gamers to experience.

ZenDadaist DrowNoble I brought it up since WoW has been played by millions of people so I made a comparison that I thought would be familiar.

Yes, I’ve seen how many marks the recipes cost.  You do realize that the quests give a LOT of marks right?  The higher your skill the more marks you get.  If you’re a patron, you get the 50% bonus marks too.  I don’t see where you get “months of dailies” to get all the recipes.  Some, of course, are less useful since the level cap increase.  I avoid getting the level 50 endgame recipes since the 51+ are superior usually.

I take it you haven’t done crafting in a long time?  I’m just not seeing where you get crafting is grindy or will take months to get everything.

DrowNoble ZenDadaist I don’t even play WoW. I have no idea why you brought WoW into this.

And Crafting in Rift has become such a vastly huge chore and grind that I gave up on it. I used to be a dedicated crafter in Vanilla. Have you seen how many crafting marks the top end recipes cost? How many months of dailies it takes to get them all? And the dailies are all the same now, you don’t eveng et the variety of things to craft that you did in Vanilla. It is literally log in, get the same dailies, craft the same items, hand them into he same guy. Every single day, for months and months.

XP isn’t a grind, but I never even mentioned XP. My complaints were all in relation to the events which was the topic of the article. My tl;dr is that they were once non-grindy and fun. They are now a literal second job and unfun.

ZenDadaist DrowNoble If you think I was trollbaiting you, that was not my intention.

Rift IS less grindy.  How about in WoW where if you try to craft you do 1 quest to get 1 token 1 time a day.  In 3 days you can get 1 recipe, unless you want a rare one.  Crafting in Rift you can do mulitple quests giving you multiple marks (more if you’re a patron) and can get multiple recipes EACH day.

Don’t want to quest? Do Instant Adventures!  Want more of a challenge, do Intrepid Adventures.  Warfronts grant xp and favor, it took Blizzard years to figure out to have battlegrounds grant xp.  At 50 you have Chronicles to do.  They added Carnage quests to the Entire Game World.  During seasonal events both IA’s give you the seasonal currency as a reward in addition to the regular tokens and loot you get.

You still think Rift is grindy? O.o

DrowNoble ZenDadaist Just had a tea on monitor moment there. Rift is less grindy?! What Rift have you been playing? Clearly not the same one I have been playing since it launched in 2011.

I quit Rift because year after year, the grind for absolutely everything, even the holiday fluff, got exponentially bigger after F2P, whereas before it wasn’t all that grindy. Take the Carnival. The first year you could get the 4 Draogn balloons for ~150 prize tickts, and prize tickets were fast and easy to obtain that first year as well. It wasn’t hard for me to earn all of the fun stuff for all of the mains I cared about. The next year tickets gots nerfed and the two new balloons were over double the price. They were just silly pet baloons exactly the same as the previous ones. And don’t even get me started on grinding those ^$£”$ing Summerfest rings. First year, it was something that was doable on more than one character – even if you couldn’t play every day. By the next year you had to choose which ONE of your characters could get a ring. The year after that, it was which ONE with alt farming support and you couldn’t miss a single goddamn week! This year for Autumn Harvest the ability to earn the signets was so tightly timed that if you missed so much as ONE of them you couldn’t get the nice shiny. There was such a clamour on the forums about it Archonix had to concede it wasn’t fair and they added an additional method of getting a signet.

I have watched Rift go from a game I wanted to log into and play the events for, because I could mix in the event acitvities with other things I was doing and still be able to afford enough in the way of shinies and fluff, to one that had stricter timing and login requirements than my sodding day job if I wanted to get so much as one nice thing for one character!

… dammit I fell for the trollbait didn’t I?

Veldan DrowNoble Worse in what way?
We got another expansion, complete with a new calling.  Even though it’s fewer zones, the fact that there is a vertical component makes them much larger.  That’s not even including Planetouched Wilds that was just recently added.

ZenDadaist You’re thinking of WoW, Rift is far less grindy.  The Unicornalia event they just had only had 4 daily quests to do, only 1 would require some effort as it involved a zone even in Moonshade.

PvP – bleh
Affinity – interested but will see
Fae Yule – haha grind, but since I’m mostly caught up to 2013-2014 in the rewards, I’ll at least get something new if I try
General improvements – nice

Nothing huge to suck me in, but I already had Planetouched Wilds and finishing Nightmare Saga for that.

Another holiday-themed full time job grind inc if you want to get so much as 1 nice shiny for your main and maybe a silly hat!

And to think Fae Yule used to be my favourite seasonal event in any MMO the first year it happened…

DrowNoble Veldan Oh I’m not arguing against Ember Isle or Storm Legion. In my opinion, Storm Legion was RIFT’s best time overall, from patch 2.3 to 2.6 (though even during this time, the fixing of UI and graphic bugs was virtually nonexistent). It’s after that that things started to get worse.

Veldan Obviously we are not playing the same game.

Trion has been consistent in making a good game.  Ember Isle was a free content patch but was nearly half the size of the original game.  The first expansion, Storm Legion, was Three Times the size of the original game.  Players wanted a quick way to play when they didn’t have a lot of time, so Trion put in Instant Adventures.  Some players were missing out on raid content, so Chronicles and Intrepid Adventures were added.  People wanted faster queue times so mercenary was added to warfronts.

The list goes on.

Compare that to A Certain Other MMO and you’ll see Trion has added more content and listened to its community far more often with a smaller staff and less revenue.
