Check out a fan-made recreation of World of Warcraft’s Duskwood in Unreal Engine 4

A lot of graphical improvements have happened for World of Warcraft over the years, but the game is still using the same fundamental graphical engine it was using with launch. That is not surprising; those things are hard to overhaul. So this video of Duskwood recreated in the Unreal Engine 4 should be taken for what it is as a look at a wholly different set of rendering rules, something offering a different look at the same basic structure of the in-game area.

The video makes particular use of the engine’s lighting features to keep the zone cloaked in more shadows than its in-game counterpart, and it’s an interesting look at an alternative to WoW‘s graphics. The author is quick to point out that this is entirely a fan project, not a comment on the game’s graphics or the age of same.

Oleg Chebeneev KevinSmith11 My point since people can’t grasp it is that blizzard could and should look into hiring these people that do this type of stuff, and would most likely would be willing to take less than their in house programs and artist for starters.
I fully understand that everything would need to be remade.

I myself don’t mind the current engine they use.  But I also realize that there is a larger community that would like to see an updated engine.  If you say you have never seen it then you probably don’t read their forums to often as it comes up all the time.  Just look they did a remodel this past year to try and bring the models to a more up to date look.

My point is studios are stupid to overlook projects like this and the people that do them.  Hell most of the mods and other creations I have seen like this are better than most professional studio produce with groups of people.

KevinSmith11 Oleg Chebeneev You do realise that its not just world building? You’ll have to redo every dungeon, every item model (which are now probably over 100,000), every character/NPC/monster model, animations so everything fit in? It would be years of work even for full scale professional studio. And for what? I almost never see WoW players asking for new engine or better visuals, people are happy with current style.

Estranged  Damn, I remember Stitches.  He was practically an outdoor raid target for the level 20’s hanging out in Duskwood.  Good times.

If wow looked like this I would drop every game that I am currently playing and with my wallet in hand take a running Superman leaping dive back into wow.. Without ever even looking back.

One of my favorite zones ever.  Higher res textures and better lighting is nice, overall good job.

Rohirrim Sythalin That mobile game can repay itself.
Can you see a vanilla server repaying itself? I can’t.
