Epic’s shooter/sandbox hybrid Fortnite hits early access July 25

Way back in 2011, Epic Games announced Fortnite, an “action building game” that functions as a bit of a co-op-shooter-slash-survival-sandbox. You’d be forgiven for having given up on it, but you’d also be wrong: Epic revealed this morning that it’s kicking off paid early access on July 25th on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

“In Fortnite, players team up to build massive forts and battle against hordes of monsters, all while crafting and looting within giant worlds where no two games are ever the same,” says Epic.

While last year Epic was still planning on a free-to-play model, that doesn’t seem to be the case now that it’s emerged from alpha. Preorders are already live, starting at $39.99 for the cheapest version all the way up to $149.99 for the limited edition deluxe kit. Console players can pick up a physical box, too.

Enought of these pseudo survival fake-sandbox with 60 players per map. I pass.

From my understanding, this is a 4-player co-op game with missions and objectives.

And a persistent ‘mother base’ that you build up and occasionally have to defend.

I like the art style and it has enough loot and explore and build things to pique my interest, but I see it suffers from the same problem Conan Exiles has, namely that whole buildings and constructions can be destroyed. I’m fine with doors, gates, barriers etc..being wasted but why would i spend days and weeks killing and collecting to build an intricate and creative bases (which I love to do) only to see them ENTIRELY knoced to rubble in a matter of minutes..thats not fun for me :(

This could be interesting, as I enjoyed Horde Mode in GoW, but I’m going to wait to see how much of the content is lockboxed.

Been playing this game off and on for years. It’s basically changed every time I’ve touched it. All I can say that it’s basically a game.

Tekken 7 is also a completely different type of game for a completely different type of audience. :p

I really really like the art direction and design. It’s lighthearted, but not childish. It doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously – a great counter to all the edgy grimdark games nowadays.

The gameplay seems to be lobby-based co-op style shooter/survival. Or at least that’s the vibe i’m getting. I’m ok with it not being open world – as long as the gameplay is fun. I’m assuming it will follow similar style to Playerunknowns Battlegrounds..

The game is definitely on my radar now.

So from the tiniest bits I can actually gather about it, it SOUNDS like there is SOME persistence, mostly with your ‘mother base’. Though it might only last until you clear a level/map out, idk. But it looks (from earlier gameplay videos at least) that you can wander around the open world area and find missions to do or select them from a UI. From there things become instanced/temporary in nature and everything you collect can go towards building up your main base.

Co-op/multiplayer has matchmaking and a drop-in function apparently.

I might be wrong on that. The NDA that Alpha players are under will be lifting on July 20th, a day before the pre-order head-start. Hoping the dev team will release more info and do a livestream of it or something like they’ve done in the past sooner than that. Right now it’s just super vague in some pretty critical areas imo.

Paid early-access makes me give developers and publishers the suspicious side-eye.

Basically, it feels like paying to be a bug-tester, when all is said and done. Interns have a better gig, and interns are too often just modern-day medieval servants, the poor, overworked bastids.

It looks interesting. Kinda reminds me of some games I don’t care for but overall I’m interested. I will probably get the legendary or the one below that. I like having two extra copies to give out. I am really bored of zombies though… so we’ll see what I do.

It looks great.
But it’s the ultimate combo of death… early access survival with tree punching (with a pickaxe…?) and base building with premade elements to kill zombies and get randomized loot +1 to awesome.

Could you make a more generic game with more boring and grindy elements than that?
Is there ganking and vehicles with hideous collisions? Just to complete the bingo card.

From what I understand it’s still going to be F2P starting sometime next year, but right now is just the ‘founders buy in’ period where they basically get money off of everyone who wants to buy into it.
