Dungeons and Dragons Online gives out free level 10 characters for Mists of Ravenloft

For a limited time, Dungeons and Dragons Online is allowing players to leapfrog over a ton of advancement and create level 10 characters right out of the gate to enjoy the new Mists of Ravenloft expansion.

There is a catch, though. To access instant level 10 characters, you’re going to need to have the new Veteran Status III applied to your account. You can either earn this with in-game favor or by purchasing the status through the game store. The upside of this, in addition to getting a character who has advanced essentially 40 levels in any other MMO, is that he, she, or it will be given a set of level 10 gear and a Cleric hireling contract.

The Veteran Status III event is running through December 17th.

The level 10 is free. I tried it for 5 minutes. Too many weird stats. Pass..

yeah i tried it too, its way to overwhelming. You create a level 1 character and talk to an NPC asking you if you want to be level 10. Say yes, and then you have to manually level up your character 10 levels putting points in skills that I have no idea what they do and selecting skills or spells that I have no idea what they do. for someone that hasnt played the game its confusing. Leveled up to level 4 and just took a break for now. they should have just given you a fully built level 10 ready to. I have no idea what to pick.

It’s totally free – you just make a character and then on the boat you start on there’s an NPC you talk to that will advance you.

The key I found is to select a class that has a paths available, so that it automatically selects the skills, feats and so on. Because otherwise, yes, the customization is nuts and overwhelming.

does it have to do with the questions the NPC asks? Even the questions are confusing, it sounds like you could pick another classes abilities. For my first character i picked a cleric. How do i pick a path?

Yes the npc on the Voyage is a universal trainer, the first question or there abouts should ask you if you are on a path. http://ddowiki.com/page/Path
pick a path for the class you want for a vanilla character. The biggest thing DDO has going for it is character building flexibility, that can make things complicated. Your first character is likely to be a gimp, if not you will make gimps at some point. Your gimp will still be fun to play anyhow. This is not unfixable you can reset your enhancements swap feats or just reincarnate, I think you still get one free stone for that. Also you can just re-roll.

Ok yes thanks, if you select the answer “I continued down my path” then it automatically levels you up and picks all your skills. However, now I have 36 enhancement points to place in three trees which it doesnt pick for me lol. It doesnt look too bad, ill pick whatever sounds good.

These weird stats are just Dungeons and Dragons stats. These are common to a lot of RPGs, wisdom, intelligence, dexterity, constitution etc. Most rpg games use them in some way but may hide the details it goes back to pen and paper games that were around before video games.

I get what they were trying to do(I’m old lol) but I like my min/maxing a bit more simplified. All that “chance to hear” and bla bla bla is too much. Wis and Dex are obvious. I also heard gearing is a nightmare to the point of having the inventory drive people out of the game.

You can gear ok just by questing. Starting at level 10 I am not sure what kind of gear you will get but traditionaly it was not bad like with the iconics at 15. Some stuff is really tough, I am still trying to get my Jibbers Blade http://m.ddowiki.com/page/Item:Cursed_Blade_of_Jack_Jibbers
and my never see it. If you are a crafter, which I am not, (I like hitting the piñata) you can make some of the best gear in the game using Canith crafting. I will have to bite the crafting bullet some day. Inventory management can be a challange but shared bank account and various bags you can buy or earn ease the pain.

I just gave it another look. It’s just not for me. I did everything the right way this time. The map is ew. then there’s stuff locked away behind paywalls. Hard Pass. I did like that the look around skill and sneaking.

There’s no catch–I didn’t purchase any Veterancy using favor or in the cash shop, but I was still able to create a bunch of level 10 characters for free last night!

My understanding is an event you can do this for free while the event is running.

So after having DDO languish on my hard drive forever I try to log in and get what apparently is a common bug: “No Subscription Found”. I was finally going to actually log into it.

According to Steam I have 112 minutes played. No lie. That’s all from patches due to “false-starting” lol. I was really gonna play it this time:(

Something like that happened to me. You have to contact customer service to reactivate your account or something.

I ended up trying finally Lotro instead. I did fix the issue though.

This part is wrong as far as I know: “There is a catch, though. To access instant level 10 characters, you’re going to need to have the new Veteran Status III applied to your account. You can either earn this with in-game favor or by purchasing the status through the game store.” Veteran I and II status must be earned from in-game Favor by completing quests/raids or purchased in the store, but Veteran III status is available for free to everyone during this limited time event.

Just remove the Free part. Really misleading.

It is free: “While this event is running, all brand-new (and non-Iconic) characters should be starting on the Airship.”

From the DDO Chronicle:

“Veteran Status 3 has arrived for all players during a limited-time event! From now through December 17th, all players can create a character and begin their journey at level 10! ”

…in other words, any character you start during the limited-time event has the option to start at level 10. After the event, any new characters you create start at level 1. If you want to pony up for veteran III status, any character that you create now and forever can start at level 10.

I don’t believe that Veteran III Status is for sale in the DDO Store, only Veteran I and II Status. Cordovan specifically mentioned that Veteran III is a free, limited-time event which will return periodically.

“Free if you buy this new cash shop doo-dad” isn’t exactly the same as free, even if it can be earned with non-RMT

If what I’m getting is even remotely confusing in a game, like this is, I’m not giving it a second look. Easy no thanks here.

Reader

I will say it’s not confusing in practice. You literally create a new character and the first person you’re directed to talk to the first dialog option is “I want to start at level 10”.

The article is wrong. Its a free temporary access to the new Veteran Status, for the duration of the event you have this status, and can make level 10s.
