Star Citizen offers a speedy look at some of what’s coming in alpha 3.3

55

Star Citizen’s Around the Verse this week is even shorter than the last few weeks’ episodes, clocking it at under five minutes as alluded to in the episode’s title (you can probably chalk it up to the holiday).

In addition to recapping the 3.2 alpha, which went formally live last weekend, Chris Roberts and Sandi Gardiner tease a bit of what’s coming in 3.3: new armor and clothing, expanded mission content that pulls in locations like Hurston, and new objectives (like blowing up satellites). Bind culling and object container streaming are apparently “well on their way to completion as well.”

Notably, Gardiner notes that “once FPS AI is fully integrated there will be even more options for contracts including some that will have you hunting down and engaging with dangerous enemies” – apparently, that was slated for 3.2 but the team held it back for polish. The whole episode is below.

Never could stay awake for the 30+ minute slogs before so I’m loving the new format.

This should be the default format that is presented to the general public while subscribers should get exclusive access to the long episodes they are paying for.

some more sexxxxxxxxy 600i screens to share since i already shared the smoke show reel i made this week. i might not be clear cuz there’s some odd LOD stuff going on when you look outside windows while in a ship but not in a seat, but we’re sitting nose to nose with a connie that came to take a peak inside at us :O

From what Ive heard they cut LoD distance for 3.2 to improve FPS. Gonna be returned back to how it was (or better) when they launch streaming tech in 3.3

they’ve been messing with LOD for a long time now.

One day I hope to see an article telling me that Star Citizen has launched. Seriously, this game seems to have been in development for longer than most people have been alive.

I predict roughly 2024-2026.. or 2030-2035, somewhere in there, if not, definitely 2050.

Reader

Gene you should try to predict Beta by looking at tea leaves it will probably be more accurate.

Beta by end of 2019. Some sites are now starting to throw this expectation base on roadmap and patch delivery contents.

Reader

Thats an interesting opinion. I gave up on predictions and promises about this project about 5 predicted releases ago. How about they get their flight model working right and we’ll discuss it from there.

We will all be in Trump’s Space Force fighting China above Earth – in real space armor with glowy blue eyes – so I’m not sure I need it in my games.

Bad prediction considering that both 3.1 and 3.2 came out on shedule

you know they’ve stated as an implied caution that they can’t deploy 3.3 until object container and bindculling are 100% right? and that it may not hit the quarterly cadence like with 3.2/1/0 because of it?

Reader
primal

i havnt heard that. the can still deploy 3.3 on time just without all the new tech and hurston in it

having hurston in game is completely dependent on that tech being functional and deployed.

pretty sure they made this clear somewhere. i’m surprised you haven’t heard it.

Reader
primal

dont you realise there is new armour, new missions and gameplay stuff, combat AI weapon use and ship behaviours, ships and vehicles and new weapons also slated for 3.3 or do you have your blinkers on and can only see object container streaming and hurston as the only things in 3.3????

unless they’re going to stop making hurston and co the big draw of 3.3?

but i mean that’s also literally what they’ve said. hurston depends on object container streaming and network bindculling, and so 3.3 may not make it on time like the past few have.

basically make or break scenario.

i believe further ai progress in player testing might be dependent on one or the other (i think specifically network bindculling).

Reader
primal

like the caveat says, things can change. they can just stick in 3.4 but then that would likely mean other stuff would slip to 3.5. would it be nice to have sure but end of the day you shouldnt be looking short term at this. they think they can get it in for 3.3 but between now and then something could take longer than planned holding it up so just have to suck it up, deal with it, and move on. the game isnt really going to be worth playing properly for another year or so anyway till alot more stuff is up and running

Reader
Oleg Chebeneev

They also said that object container streaming tech is far in progress bar. And they have few months to finish and polish it.

Reader
primal

yeah but like i said something could take longer and hold them up

Reader
Joe Blobers

You are both right.

Hurston won’t be in 3.3 if OCS is not implemented but 3.3 won’t be cancelled either. Salvaging and most others contents are still a thing.
A this point of 3.3 evolution we still don’t know and probably have to wait for September to get a hint about possible release or push back.

Reader
Ken from Chicago

Close. You’re right. Hurston might not show this Fall if it isn’t ready. However alpha 3.3 will be released in this Fall. They said they won’t hold up a release based on features. That was a major sore point in the delay of the Alpha 3.0 launch.

If a feature isn’t ready for the next quarterly release, then the quarterly release will be launched without said feature.

this is one of those clear examples where their comms is more noise than signal.

FPS ai seems to really clearly mean like mobs that walk on two or four legs, instead of NPC pirate ships. but i’m not quite sure if this effort includes the ship related aspects of individual character NPC ai that they’ve (somewhat reecently) talked about in mostly asides related to their work on NPC turret gunner ai and NPCs navigating inside ships (one of the reasons given on spectrum iirc it was for why in particular the mustang is being reworked)

does this mean enemy mobs on planet surfaces at quest POIs? does this mean forward movement towards NPC crew members and wingmen? does this mean work towards the turret gunner NPCs thing?

one thing is for sure tho, this not going to ever be something you will experience in game yourself

Reader
primal

They can do that, you just have it as part of a mission set up then cause it to spawn at a certain part

Reader
primal

and about the individual fps and ship AI thats in 3.5 under combat styles which give them there own personalities there so it is pretty clear. think they did mention the fps ai was basic stuff or something

i tried skimming the video for any mention of this (since it seems to be the main thing in teh vide or so MOP tells me!) but i couldn’t get past the awkwardness of sandi and CR doing w/e the fuck they are doing in talking about mining lazers killing players if you hit them with it.

Reader
primal

well even in the roadmap it says rudimentary support for fps ai so it basically means basic

ok but i didn’t mention the level of complexity. i mentioned the areas of the game it would apply to, citing various ai things they’ve been talking about being in the works for hte past some years and being areas of focus and priority (like NPC turreters ai).

the implication is they’ve made this or that AI thing a priority that’s right around the corner or the next patch and been MIA since then (at least in game).

ofc the ai that is in game has improved quite a bit – obviously missing huge chunks of coverage in terms of what ship types that now show up as NPCs since at least 3.1 have or don’t have ai at all, but the ones that do have ai are finally fun and enjoyable to fight against which is great imo.

Reader
primal

well i’d imagine its quite complex to design some AI from the ground up to do all that stuff plus that might even be redundant now anyway seeing as there is going to be a module that can control the turrets so id say it would be more efficient to use them and get an engineer to repair the modules.

deekay_plus

well that and they initially were going to outsource it and then it either hasn’t been a priority or they’ve regularly mislead us with the state of their progress on it on the pass in such a way that one would otherwise infer that it was further along than more recent statements and dazzle reels/demos seem to indicate?

and turret “modules” sounds abolsutely stupid af and basically admitting defeat on NPC crew members.

Reader
primal

well its not just for turrets its for pretty much everything, flight all sorts of stuff. i dont remember through any of the ATVs where theyve tried to pass off npc’s controlling turrets as being far along and i dont even remember them showing anything where an npc was controlling a turret

could be an alternative to npc crew members, if the modules are cheaper but the usefulness of them is lower but its there to at least scare off an attacker then it might have its place.

they talked about turret NPC ai being a priority to bring NPC cutlasses adn connies into the game.

this was when cutlasses would spawn and then immidiately either warp off or just explode.

the cutlasses and connies are actually part of gameplay in a bigger way now. but all they do is sit there and try to “turret” you (as in spin around in place) with their forward guns. they’re actually realyl annoying to fight the last time i got some spawned on me.

but their essential turret ai is not working yet. there was indication it was nearing something positive a long time ago.

Reader
primal

ah right. well putting the remote modules in would solve that issue straight away haha :D

Per last Friday’s Reverse The Verse, the ultra-light ATV is not due to the holiday, but rather them wanting to change up how their community content is organized.

Also the destroy satellite missions were released in 3.2, not upcoming for 3.3.

positive sign really. the at least half hour + of mostly noise just to make half hour or longer videos multiple times a week was tiresome years ago.

if they could also shift from too much talk of and most of the “footage” being stuff that isn’t coming for who knows how long and what is immidiately imminent and in game now but maybe not as well known, i might even watch the videos again.

i feel they could also stand to do less than weekly frequency for these videos too. there’s really not that much to talk about week to week and it’s abundantly clear how time padded they have been for a long time.

so welcome change, but more improvement to be had maybe. all in due time maybe.
