Zeal is an upcoming MMOARPG with PvP, PvE, 15 classes, and no grinding

Here comes a new one to the MassivelyOP pages! It’s an MMO called Zeal, which developer Lycanic Studios bills as “an indie action RPG that allows you to build your character and fight against players in Arenas, slay creatures in Dungeons and conquer savage lands against both in Conquest Mode.”

The trick is that you’re not going to be grinding; you are picking your character from a pool of 15 classes and leaping in to just play rather than grind in the MMORPG style. That’s chiefly because this is a PvP-oriented game, although there’s apparently plenty of PvE too, as small-group dungeons and solo/co-op campaigns are mentioned. On the flipside, you do get to heavily customize your character with abilities, stats, and appearance within the class and character you pick.

According to the game’s website, playtesting has been ongoing all summer, leading into a Kickstarter coming in September, alpha by the end of the year, beta early next year, and release by summer of 2019.

Thing like Conquest here appeal to me so much… if they just lost the whole PvP aspect to things. Instead, such an idea is nothing but another “Hey, you can do this cool thing!” *whisper* ‘Please go get ganked for us!’

The first game that really works well on taking over lands from foes as a larger community, non-guild specific… I think will probably have something that appeals to the PvE community at large. Both because it can have individual effort matter (including solo players being able to contribute without frustration) and because it will be something which drives a community goal that doesn’t just involve grinding dailies for tokens or some such (hopefully!)

Uhn. Found nothing on their page about PvE. It’s defined on Steam as “A PvP-focused action RPG” and elsewhere as an “MMORPG”.

“Conquest mode” is code for “OW PvP”, so that isn’t PvE, either.

So you can either battle in an arena or search out OW PvP in Conquest mode.

That aside, this is exactly what PvPers want in an MMO. No grinding, no having to do any of that PvE stuff to level. Just straight up PvP at level cap.

Hopefully, they will find their audience, because this would be a nice middle ground for PvPers who don’t like either MOBAs or PvE leveling.

PvE
— Small group dungeons aimed at groups of 5 players or less with challenge modes.
— Single player and Co-op campaign.
More details coming soon!

Not much to go on at this point really.

I am more interested in their “no grinding” clause. And what that actually means in gameplay. Because I have yet to see a MMO without it. And I didn’t in theory believe such a beast could exist.

…so this could mean something very new…or just their definition of grinding is different from the understood term of it. :(

My first guess is no levels, but beyond that who knows. I guess we’ll find out.

Game companies need to take a hard look at the success of grinding games.
1) People want to stick with a game for a while
2) extensive grinding makes people stay with a game
3) higher pop draws more people, goto1

People complain about grinding. People complain about everything. Look at success/player retention and it reflects that customers stay for the grind, and quit when they have achieved the ‘best’ gear.

I mean GW2 would certainly like to have a word with you. Indeed some players love the grind and are totally into games that focus on it. Other players hate grinding and prefer to avoid games that focus on it. MMO players are not all the same, and that’s ok.

The demographic doesn’t have time to level for the sake of leveling. It’s a waste of time when the real game doesn’t start until max level in most games. It’s only there to suck up a month of a players sub.

I dislike grinding levels too, talking about economic grinding/endgame gear grinding.

I don’t mind grinding as long as I get something worth my time. Now if they said, “no PvP,” then maybe I’d take a look.

Anyway, we all know where this is going. Nowhere that I will be, but I’m sure someone will have their fun with it.

Lost me at the “no grinding” statement.

Leaping in just to play might be a good option for some players who care little about character progression (or those with time constraints) and just want to throw fireballs at other people on a character, but personally seems like a step backwards from the direction I’d like to see MMOs go.

Give me meaningful progression that accentuates expansive character, class, world and itemization systems. Not “pick this class n stuff dont worry u dont have to progress u start off great :)”.

But as always, to each their own. Hope this is the game for some of y’all!

In most MMO games now a days, leveling isn’t meaningful progression… At all…. It’s just a grind to force folks into getting vested into a character.

The real progression is AFTER the character hits max level and can actually start playing the game.

Leveling in most MMO games is a waste of time and energy as the games don’t start until max level. It’s archaic.

Correct, and the all-together removal of such mechanics is not what I personally would like to see.

I’d rather more innovative and new ideas be brought to the field than “this mechanic isn’t perfect / fun, let’s remove it completely.”

Especially since “grind” is apparently just seen as playing the game in general these days.

Again, I’m sure it is a selling point for some people. Just not me.

I actually miss this game, was quite fun when it came out. The box (disc and all) are still part of my hardcopy MMO collection on my book shelf.

‘no grinding’ means no progession?
No harvest, no crafting, no leveling,…
And the fun is going to be inside the ‘playing’?
It’s hard to believe. Good luck.

Hey, at least they’re not making the incredibly stupid mistake of trying to combine level/gear grinding and PvP into the same game.

Oh yeah, that’s so stupid, a game that has both those things can’t possibly be succesful. *cough, WoW*
